Round of Choice for a Battle Rifle

223 Rem. The perfect balance of weight and availability. I might have picked 30/06 if it was one of the options though.

I think the .223 is so over rated as a "BATTLE" rifle round, but it fits in the common thought of the military of having the soldier to hurt people and break things. but I don't like the idea of just hurting the BG I want to put him done and then some. the .223 is a great assult rifle round. I definitlly make a distinction between the two. For a battle rifle I prefer the heavier round as a .308 or 30-06. give me a FAL or M14 any day.

If you are going to include the 5.45 you should think about the new 5.7 x 28 from FN.. the new p-90 seems like it would be a great inner city/jungle weapon.

I think all the rounds you mentioned have merit for a SHTF/Battle rifle round. When TSHTF, if you're inner city, you'll probably seek to exit said city to avoid possible bad situationals.

If I was traveling alone, the 30 cal would make sense as its most versatile and available. But I wont be traveling alone so an assortment is in order! Not all family members are comfortable with the 30 cal's, so in addition to the two 30's, we have three .223's and a few shotguns etc., to cover the spectrum.

True enough, the .223 isnt as efficient or versatile as some of the 30's, powerwise, but it can certainly pass out much grief very quickly. Suppressive fire is an option if you have to move. Plus the .223/5.56 ammo is everywhere too..

Buy whatever suits your fancy/situation, in any of the more widely used calibers you mentioned. They ALL are good viable choices.:D

A "Battle Rifle" is generally a full-size semi-automatic or select-fire rifle that fires a full-power rifle cartridge, and often has a detachable box magazine, etc. Some full-power rifle cartridges used in battle rifles of the past include .30-06, 8x57JS, .308, 7.62x54R, 7.5x55 Swiss, 7x57, to the best of my knowledge. Examples include the M14/M1A, FN-FAL, SIG 542, SIG 510, Dragunov, HK G3, Japan type 64, AR-10, SR-25.

An "Assault Rifle" (non-legal definition) is generally a full-size or carbine-size select-fire rifle that shoots an intermediate-power rifle cartridge. Some examples of internediate cartridges used in assault rifles include: 5.56x45, 7.62x39, 5.45x39, . Examples of assault rifles include: M16/M4, AR70, AR70/90, Bofors AK5, AK-47/74, CZ58, Daewoo K2, Enfield L85A1, FAMAS, FARA 83, FN-CAL, FN-FNC, Galil, HK33E, HK G41, Imbel MD2, Japan Type 89, MP44, Sako M90, SIG 540, SIG 550, SR88A, Steyr AUG, Valmet M76/78.

That said, the only full-power rifle cartridge you listed was .308, so that's the one.

There have been numerous other threads discussing the difference between those calibers...

Viva le' academia !
But the way I read it, he was referring to a SHTF cartridge.:D

So wheres that leave us now? Oh yeah, buy a .308 "Battle Rifle" and supplement it with some "Assault Rifles" too...:D

I agree with those who say the .308 is the only battle rife cartridge, of those listed. The others are seldom used at ranges more than a few hundred meters. A "battle rifle" should be a 1000m weapon shouldn't it?

.380 with a 165gr Ballistic tip moving at 2850fps.

I could only imagine there would be a very BIG exit wound.

.270 Winchester! ;)

.308 is SERIOUSLY velocity deficient!

Particularly at 500 Yards!

.308 Fanatics....

Get a high velocity cartridge.

And NO! .308 is NOT!!!!!! a high Velocity Cartridge!

No since 1920!!!

.308 is best for killin'. But if you kill 'em, they won't learn nothin'. .223 can kill, but it might just wound 'em. It doesn't take anybody to aid the dead. The wounded require medical attention. I'd go with the .223.

Hmmmm...

In 5.45 Soviet I'd use 60gr bimetallic stuff with the air cavity tip the "poison bullet" Tracerstop and bottom. May consider barnaul 7N22 armor piercers (57 gr)

In 223/5.56 ss109 or good old 55 gr fmj Why re-invent the wheel? Add some tracers In the top and bottom of the mag.

In 7.62 Soviet I'd opt for 123 gr SP ammo, again tracers where needed. the Low velocity of the 7.62 by 39 makes me want and expanding softpoint bullet in this weapon. Barnaul 7n23 AP 122gr might be mixed in.

In 308 I'd want a federal premium 168 gr match king hp. Best 308 ammo ever. that W. German frangible load might be good, but the ballistics of the 168 are well know.. good long range bullet. Spare mag of tracers for marking.

No need for the .308 to get an AP load.. its all AP.

I'd use the same bullet the 168gr hp matchking for the 30-06.

Hmph. Not listed, but something on the lines of a .250/3000 +P would be perfect:

Flat trajectory
High retained energy
Great penetration
Lighter weight than existing "battle rifle (.308, 8mm, 7.62x54mm etc)" rounds
Less recoil than " "
