Rossi “bodyguard” 38 special

A good friend just bought this Rossi 38 spcl. It is a “bodyguard” type revolver, 5 shots, DAO (there is a "slot" where you can see the hammer, like in the S&W 38/49, but you can not cock it).
It came with a big wood grips – now it has rubber Pachmayr.

The box says it is a “model 627”, but in the inside of the crane it says “726” ( I do not know where Rossi's are supossed to have their model written).

I was looking for information about this revolver – model 627 or model 726 - but found nothing. Does somebody know anything about this gun?

Thanks for your help.

Looks like maybe someone took a bit off the top of the hammer, to make it DAO. On other makers' guns of this style, there's enough sticking up to manually cock the hammer.

This is a new in box gun, so, if it was done, it was factory done. Besides, you can use a stick o similar to push the hammer to the rear, but it won't cock - it is DAO.

It looks like it has a hammer mounted firing pin.
Has to be old stock new in box.
Pretty sure a new Rossi would have a frame mounted FP

No relevant info, sorry, but please make sure to pass on to your buddy NOT to dry fire it without snap caps in place. Broke the hammer-mounted firing pin on my Model 68 that way. Not the strongest metallurgy.

Googling around I see a few notes that Rossi had a stainless model 88 that had a shrouded hammer. Maybe this is the blued model.

Are there any numbers or markings on the grip frame? You will have to remove the grips to check.

The only Rossi I have is an older M518 .22LR. The grip frame has several groups of numbers on it, one of which is 518, the model number. Of course, it also says Made In Brazil INTERARMS clearly stamped on the frame.

My experience with Rossi revolvers is limited, the only ones being my .22 and an old five-shot .38spl. (M82? I think) that belonged to a friend, but they seem like decent guns for the money. IMHO

One more thing, It looks like one of your pictures shows the cylinder crane. The model number for my Rossi is stamped on the frame right where the crane, or yoke mates with the frame when the cylinder is closed, the same place as S&W revolvers. You might want to check there too.

Nothing there

Sorry I can't be of more help. I don't know what you have there, but it is definitely unique. Nothing on the grip frame either then?

I'm surprised there is so little information available for this gun on the web.

Additional information

I looked at the grip frame. On the left side you can see “627” , the numbers 1 and 2 or 12, and the number 93.
I think we can now assure this is a model 627.
93 maybe the manufacture year
No idea about the 1-2 or 12.

On the right side you can see the numbers “75” and 7 26. It doesn’t seem to be 726 – it is more like 7 and 26, with a space in between. The “726” stamped in the crane is most probably 7 26 also, but without the space (due to limited...er..space). This maybe a control number/worker code...?

I thought it could be a variant of the model 27, which was the predecessor to the model 31 and model 68, but I don't know if the 27 ever had an ejector shroud. The only picture I could find is from an older thread on this forum.

However, your gun looks a lot like this model 68, minus the hammer shroud and of course, the unique symbol on the side plate.

Beyond this, I'm all out of Ideas. Let us know if you find anything more.
