Tough guy Jet felled by one kiss from actress
Martial arts film star Jet Li, best known for beating Mel Gibson to a pulp in the high action thriller Lethal Weapon 4 - is more worried about being kissed than taking a punch.
Li - the front-runner to join Keanu Reeves in the next two instalments of the Matrix sci-fi trilogy when filming starts in Australia later this year - has confessed that he recently came off worse for wear when his current on-screen lover gave him a friendly kiss.
The handsome Chinese-born kung fu expert is enjoying box office and critical success in the United States with his just released action film Romeo Must Die.
The film has earned more than US$40 million (HK$311 million), almost tying with Julia Roberts' Erin Brockovich for first place, in just over two weeks and has turned Li into a red-hot commodity in Hollywood.
During his lengthy career as a fists-flying, high-kicking hero in Hong Kong-made action films, he has survived the most brutal fight scenes unscathed.
But he admits that it only took a kiss from gorgeous hip-hop singer Aaliyah, his Romeo Must Die leading lady, to do him some serious damage.
The actor, who plays Romeo in the film, quickly discovered he was allergic to his Juliet when she gave him a wet one.
He confessed: "I was doing an interview and she suddenly kissed my cheek.
Later, I washed my face and I saw something - a rash.
"I realised it was from her lipstick."
Most men would die for a kiss from the stunner.
But Li admitted: "The next day I said to Aaliyah: Please, don't ever kiss me again because I'm allergic to your lips." (Jeff: LOL! - but if I were Jet, I would have demanded she not paint her lips)
The film is a heavy action drama about a man who falls for a rival gangster's sister.
Film producers hope that Li's expertise will add some martial arts authenticity to Matrix 2 and Matrix 3 if they can afford him.
His salary has sky-rocketed to US$5 million a picture since the success of Romeo.
"It's the same all over the world. If you make money for the company, the company wants to give you more money," Li said.
