Rocky Hunting boots

Rocky USED to be my choice of boots but since they went to China, quality and sizing have taken a nose dive. I threw away a couple of pairs that were less than a year old because they fell apart. Wolverine isn't much better. Right now, I'm wearing US military surplus boots with no complaints.

Pretty much the same here with most everyone's reply....I've since switched to Lacrosse, Muck Boots and Danner. (not necessarily in that order ;))

I have a pair of 18" Lacrosse 1500gr. AlphaBurly Pros that are my go to boots, when sitting still in the latter stand all day in 20* or lower temps. The extra length of the upper is nice when tracking through brambles and deep snow too.

I quite buying Rocky boots a long time ago.
I could not find a Rocky boot that was strong enough to stay in place on my feet when hunting in the Rockys!
What i mean by that is no matter how tight i tied the boots they would basically turn sideways on my feet.
I carry a bunch of extra pounds but the Red Wings support me well.
And i never buy insulated boots anymore either.
I have been wearing the Irish Setter 3858 and so far am very happy with them, although they were awful to break in!!
They have this,
ScentBan silver ion technology in the lining and footbed
And I just stuck my nose in them and they didn't smell bad at all and I wear them 7 day a week.
I had to special order these Non-Insulated boots.
I was very disappointed when my leather Red Wing boots went bad.
I wore a hole in the sole from applying the brakes on my pickup. I never picked up my size 13, i just rotate my foot to throttle-brake and when this happened there is a plastic cap inside the toe of the boot and apparently that broke causing it to invert into the boot. Nobody seemed able to fix it.
ETA: when it gets REAL cold i bring out the Bunny Boots!! Not the white Micky Mouse Boot either. ;)

I was not aware that Rocky shifted production to China, thanks for that info.

That said, my heaviest weight boots (2,400 Grams of Thinsulate) are Rocky's. I bought them about 2 years ago at one of those "closeout stores" for only $50, so they were most likely manufactured 4-5 years ago. I have been 100% satisfied with mine. My feet stay dry and warm in sub-zero temperatures. I have not had the odor issue you describe.

Just hard to find a good American made boot these days. Many brand names are made overseas and assembled here. Aren't Lacrosse and Mucks now being made in China as well?

Been looking at Kenetrek boots made in Montana. Anyone have any experience with them?

They are expensive as the dickens.

That they are. Was checking them out. But I'd rather pay more for a pair that will last me a very long time that can be rebuilt if necessary then some of this throw away junk that lets my feet get soaked every time I'm out in them. And the junk only lasting a season or two.

Am actually kinda looking for two pairs of good boots.

One pair in kinda a 'chucka' boot style with a less aggressive sole for early bow season and another 8" pair with a bit more aggressive sole for winter wear.

The horror stories go on and on: I wore Belleville GI boots for the longest time without any issues then decided I needed a new pair. I typed their name into Optics Planet and up popped a pair of Blackhawk boots for $115. I am not a shopper and naively thought that must be a name for a Belleville boot (that's what I typed into search). Upon arrival a big "Made in China" greeted me:mad:
So far they are ok but no where near the quality of my now very used Belleville's.

Rocky boots used to be made about 15 miles down the road from me.

Now they are made in China.

They used to be sewn by the people of Nelsonville Ohio.

They cost just as much as they did when they were American made boots.

But now they are sewn by children in a sweat shop in China.

Don't buy Rocky boots.

I'm with you Willie. Grew up in Athens used to wear them. Won't touch them now.

10 year old Rockys

had a pair of Snow Stalker Extremes, Took a season to break in and them kept my feet nice and warm for the next nine years - Great for sitting or still hunting in the cold. this year the rubber ripped away from the leather uppers - Will see if they can be repaired cause I really liked them- If not , based on this thread I'll check out something else. Finding the ideal combo between pac and hiking boots is tough. had Sorels before that cursed em something fierce the first time i had to drag a deer back, Warm but zero support. Got some lighter weight Meindels made in Germany I like. I still got fewer boots than my wife has shoes;)

Even the American staple in work boots (Red Wing) has shifted most production to China.

As said earlier, they still cost as much and what does that tell you?

I have a pair of Rockys (camo, insulated, & waterproof) that are really stiff. I don't particularly like to wear them but I do during the winter months out in the woods.

No, but I've had them fall apart after just a season or two - junk. Though in fairness, I think nearly ALL major brands have certain "junk lines" and certain "good lines".
