Rock River Arms PWA AR15

I have a chance to buy a used Rock River Arms PWA AR15 for $599. It has had only 400 rounds through it and it looks well maintained and practically brand new. The previous owner sold it to for a skeet gun. My dealer says this is a good gun and very accurate.

I checked it out and it seems to be better quality than Bushmaster's AR's. If I buy it I am trading in my Mini-14. I can't hit sh*t with my Mini-14.

Any opinions?

I emailed a guy who is selling new RRA flat tops for, IIRC, $550. Of course, you will need to buy a carry handle or mount a scope on that...A2 carry handles go for about $100, I think.

Yeah,

It is a PWA upper, and lower......and the barrel is probably not chrome lined.......
So, it isn't as good as a BM.
It is not mil spec quality, but for what you want, and what you have sounds like a good deal.
Everyone has their Opinions, and all makers make dud's once in a while.
But, please keep in mind, that in the U S A, only 3 manufacturer's have ever to my knowledge, procured a military contract.
Colt, Fabrique Nationale', and Bushmaster.
This is for U. S. Military USE .............
This is from the FWIW file...........

:)

Milspec:

Short for made by the lowest bidder.

;)

That is a good price for a standard A2 style gun. I'd go for it.

Brad,
Here you go, 16 inch heavy barrel, full site radius. A2 sites, Crhrome barrel and chamber, chamger is made 5.56MM ammo so it will not be a problem to shoot surplus. (some are chamber for commercial .223 I understand) http://assaultweb.net/ubb/Forum12/HTML/201664.html

Ask what he will sell just one for. Need mags I can sugjest someone there as well.

Good luck

Karsten

PS use USGI mags only and save yourself the headache

Mil Spec...lowest bidder

Also means "Meets military Specification".
When you have mfgr's touting "Matched Upper, & Lower", this means they VARY in dims, and this ain't good..........
As well as materials and manufacturing process's
I'll take the mil-spec over ANY off the shelf AR pieces made....PERIOD.
Been there, done that......and it twerent' pretty.........

"I'm too poor to but inexpensive things".

How about ya'll......think about that one a bit.;)

I had a PWA and I loved it! I was really surprised at how smooth the action on mine was. It actually outshot my Bushmaster

I bought the AR15.COM Limited Edition rifle for $660, which included shipping to my local FFL. It's a very nice gun, and adding the 2 stage match trigger made it a sweet shooter! Since I wanted to mount an optical sight, the flattop configuration was just what the doctor ordered... :)

Ronin...........

Was your barrel chrome lined on the PWA???.
IF not, then that's why it shot better......
PWA's are ok, they just aren't the BEST available......
Same as Oly's............
Toss a coin, they are about equal.
Just so's you folks don't get the wrong idea...I am talking UP BM's, because NO ONE else makes real mil-spec rifles in the AR series anymore.
So, IF you want one, you got no choice........:(

Humm, Tshoes are you saying that quality costs abit more, hence you don't have the replace the item? Could you mean that maybe buying one of the ABC's could mean less headaches down the road. Naa you could mean that, I have read your post and you just aren't that sorta guy ;-)

a Dissapator like the one for sale above for $600 or $1200 for the pair.....find a friend, cause $600 is a deal.

This is one I shall never need to replace

and this is something not every kid on the block has. Sorry about the can...it was the right hieght.

Spend a few extra bucks and take care of it. Tshoes is right.....you pay for what you get.

IMHO I would send the guy I posted above email and make him an offer or find a friend and buy them both for $1200. Those are great shooters, Heavy Barrel and the full lenth site radius.

Thanks folks for your opinions. Depending on what my dealer offers me on my Mini-14, I just might buy that AR15. It really seems like such a better gun. And it seems to fit my body better.

I guess that is the key many times. A good buddy of mine, a real shooter, when I asked him about the Mini-14, he said that it would take at least another 500 bucks to shoot as good as any AR15. I was just too cheap I guess.

I can't really hit much good with my Mini over 50 yards. A shame as it is really reliable.

Personally, I'd jump on it.

And for what it's worth, most of the newer PWA's I've seen are as nice or better looking than Bushmasters as far as machining and finishing goes. But then again, the PWA doesn't have that nifty little snake logo.

I've always wondered why everyone gets so worked up about the chrome lined barrel. We've been shooting rifles for all our lives without chrome lining, suddenly it's mandatory? Sure, it's easier to clean the bore, but not so much that it's unthinkable to have an AR without the chrome lining...

C L Bore

Johnwill,
it has nothing to do with anything except FUNCTION...........the AR family is notorius for feeding problems without a CL barrel....and chamber.
As long as you keep them VERY clean, no problems.....problem is, most will/do not.
Therefore......jams, misfeeds, stuck cases, really in truth a C L bore is NOT a plus for anything except this, and longevity.
It hurts acuracy, but function is the most important prerequisite.

Well, I guess I have a keeper, because I haven't had any problems with the LEGP from AR15.COM without the chrome lined barrel...

John: There's nothing wrong with a non-chromelined barrel. Match barrels aren't chromelined. However, chromelined barrels last thousands of rounds longer than non-chromelined barrels.

Man, I HATE the Net for trying to get ALL

My thoughts across......it's tough enough in person!!!!!.

John, Walter is right ON..........

What I should have said is I MEAN really dirty.....not just a hundred rounds, I'm taliking sevral hundreds of rounds...without a cleaning.
GENERALLY speaking, a C L Barrel is ALL that will handle this type of rounds, and keep on going.
And this is MAINLY due to a C L Chamber..........
I hope this clarifies my obsesssion.;)

I posted this sorta reply at another form and I shall post may fellings again......Chrome lined or not, take care of your rifle.
Geez, do you change the oil in you cars.
What, one spends 3 hours at the range and doesn't have 15 minutes to stroke and swab a barrel.

I keep everything clean, hence I don't have problems when I call on them.

Karsten

Karsten,

You have put my thoughts into words very well! :D While I agree that a chrome lined barrel might indeed be nice, it's certainly not necessary. I'm not likely to take my AR out and shoot 1,000 rounds without cleaning, and the plain steel barrel handles a couple hundred at the range with no sweat.
