Rifle used in the movie "Sniper"

In defense of Tasco..........

Those of you who hate Tasco are misguided. :p Tasco does not manufacture their own scopes. They buy their glass from the same places as the higher end manufacturers do, therefore, and they can dictate the quality levels of their scopes as they see fit. If their niche is the lower end scope market...so be it. That's where they feel they can make their money because not everyone can afford top notch scopes. However, when they decided to market the Super Sniper, their intention was to market a high end, quality product. The military must have thought it was a good enough scope - they awarded Tasco a contract.
Admittedly, :o I have had other Tasco scopes in the past and they were not the greatest, however, I got what I paid for. The Super Sniper is the exception to this, not the rule.

Ok, back to the central focus of this thread. I have another sniper question. In the movie "Shaving Ryan's Privates" :D what type of rifle did the U.S. sniper use?

Hathcock's standard load was 85 rounds of '06 (usually M-72 Match). However, in some of his early work he only carried a box of 20, but this was for a short "day" (or night) mission. Early on, USMC snipers used model 70s, 1903s, and M1Ds. Later they switched to the model 700.

Ryan Scope

One of the things that really irked me in "Ryan" was after hearing how much time and research went in to making it they have the US Scout/Sniper CHANGE scopes in a battle (never mind that the two scopes DO NOT use the same rings) but really any body out there have 2 scopes for the same rifle and interchange them in the field (puh-leeze)

Sorry just had to rant some.

Only 19hrs 26 min to go (but who's counting ;) )

nestor - well maybe not on the "battle field", but on the shooting field.

had a HK 91, marked harrngton & richardson (really old), that came with 2 factory claw-type scope mounts. mounted a 10-20x scope w/target-dot in one, for fine work and a 1.5-4.5x in the other for "field games".

zeroed with the little one at 25yds, shot at 100yds, changed scopes and read the group. zeroed with the big scope. changed scopes back and shot another group with the little scope. the difference was less than my personal varience.

great concept, a bit too heavy and set for the continential head position.

Not to change the movie, but in clear and present danger, wasn't the sniper "chavez" carrying a robar SR-60? Actually, the way that rifle recoiled and not to mention the noise, it was probably a modified marlin .22 LR shooting sub-sonic CCI CB's. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

OK, this is bugging me. In the beginning of Private Ryan, just after they blew the berm with the Bangalor Torpedo and took cover behind the cement baracade, the sniper character can be seen in the background (out of focus) behind Tom Hanks with what looks to me as a left handed Model 70 with an Unertl scope... but later, he is back to the Springfield...

Maybe I am crazy. But I've watched that movie at least 3 times and try to catch that few second scene each time but feel it is definately not his Springfield...

Anyone who has it one tape might be able to catch these few frames in focus...

U.S. sniper rifle???

Did we ever come to a conclusion about the rifle the US sniper was using?

Gunny Hathcock also killed a Vietnamese Sniper by shooting him through the scope. Charles Hendrson's book Marine Sniper is a good book on the famous Gunny
