Rifle used in the movie "Sniper"

For those of you that have seen that cheesy movie "Sniper", what type of rifle is Billy Zane using?

Well...

That rifle was a Heckler & Koch SR9(TC), which is simply an SR9 with PSG1 trigger group, pistol grip and buttstock. The forearm would not accept a bipod on any of these models. The standard HK91 furniture would readily install though. With a standard HK91 forearm and bipod installed, the gun became the rifle used by Billy Zane in the movie "Sniper".

And why would a sniper run around in the jungle with only a 5 round magazine? To show that he was in control of the situation (referring to the attack on the boat).
Boy that movie was silly. I always file my bullets to help mess up their accuracy.

I think the point is the rifle takes 20 round mags in addition to the 5 rounders. Additionally, the movie makes a point of them running out of ammo, ie Zane is forced to pick up the single round Baringer ejects on the beach at his surrender so that he can rescue Baringer.

Kind of silly to me, I mean how much trouble is it to carry 100 or so rounds, even if you're "so good" you'll never need them.

I have read a few books about the Army and Marine Corp. snipers in Vietnam and they were not laden with ammunition. I don't recall exactly how many rounds of match grade fodder they normally carried, but it wasn't a whole lot. Most of their missions were centered on "scouting" and calling in arty, so 100 of rounds of ammo wasn't really necessary; especially since the Marine Corp. used bolt action rifles. (model 70 Winchesters in .30-06 and later the Remington 700.)In contrast, the Army primarily used the M-21 (modified M-14) which would obviously be more fitting for ammo consumption. But the bottom line for the snipers was the motto "one shot, one kill." Therefore, they didn't need to tote around lots of ammo.

I think Hathcock said he carried 80 rounds or so.

Seems reasonable to me.

I agree with you that they don't need to overdo it, I've humped heavy stuff and wouldn't carry anything unnecessary, but, if memory serves, Zane had FIVE rounds, I haven't seen it in a while, can't recall how many they fired together.

There is a distinct possibility that a sniper will not get away after firing that one shot.

Most gunfights involve less than 5 rounds, but I load to capacity and often cary an extra mag.

Happy medium would be something more than a single digit round count, I think.

BTW, speaking of humping heavy shuff, anyone else notice that Zane's rig had no sling?? Could they not figure out the HK 3 point, or what.

Berringer filed his bullets and his finger at different times in the movie. Both practices are a bit silly, the first being downright counterproductive. However, within the parameters of "artistic license" the movie was pretty good overall.

Am I correct in assuming that the H&K SR9 is chambered in .308? Also, I can't remember, but was Berenger's rifle a model 70 or 700? (obviously chambered the same as Zane's)

Yup, SR-9s are (SHH) -91s with no flash hider and a thumbhole, unless they are the -T or -TC models, equipped with MSG-90 and PSG1 stocks and pistol grips, for sporting purposes, doncha know. .308s all the way.

Baringer's is wrapped up like a pig in a blanket, I always assumed it was a 700, but the plot mandates it's a .308 since Zane kills El Surjano with that round ejected from Baringer's bolt gun.

I need to get a life, huh?

I'm the one who needs to get a life.........I started this post! :D Oh well, I truly wondered about Zane's weapon. And I won't admit how many times I have seen the movie. ( I still think it's campy.) :barf:

At least I have an excuse for buying it and watching it over and over....

When Zane puts his rig together, I get to shout "I have that rifle!"

:D

PS. That is the rifle I plan to put that Super Sniper on, that's why I had so much trouble deciding on a (gulp) Tasco.

New Movie Being Made/ may be...........

A real good one.
it is supposed to be based on the true story of the battle for Stalingrad.........
I forget the names, but seems the Rooskies had a real shooter, and he had killed two or three hundred Nazi soldiers, and Snipers.........
The Fuerher, didn't take too kindly to this , being he was real keen on the Ayrian supremacy jag.
So, they sent the very BEST sniper Germany had, to remedy the problem and to boost the morale of the troops......the rest you either know, or will have to wait to see the movie!!!!!!!!!!!

If I remember my history correctly the German sniper did indeed get the Soviet sniper. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Soviets used snipers more than the other countries involved in WWII. I could be wrong though, it has been a long time. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

The movie is titled "enemy at the gates" and stars Ed Harris as Major Koenig and Jude law as Vassili Zaitsev. It has a release date of March 23.

Actually the Russian sniper won that particular contest against the German by shooting at the glint of the German's scope.

(A very good example of the need for a SUNSHADE). :)
