Rifle Shopping - Black Bear + Deer

Anything that starts with at least a ".3", is above 150 gr, and moving above 2500 fps, ought to kill most critters on this continent I'd imagine.

I agree with Peetzakiller

The facination with big calibers that recoil like a mule kick is almost humorous. A 243 Winnie will take a mulie at 250 yards easy. A poor shot with a .375 H&H will wound an animal about the same as a poor shot with a 243.

Recoil is a killer for folks that develop a flinch easily (like me.) I know an old geezer at the local gun store that used to shoot with another guy I know. Evidently the old geezer could handle darn near anything without flinching. But most people I know can't.

Wasn't there some old boy named Bell that killed many an elephants with the 6.5 Swede?

Always makes me shrug when I read about using a 300 Win Mag on deer. Like shooting flies with a 22 long rifle. IMHO :D

I would prefer a bit of overkill on the bear for safety sake. My uncle damn near got his ass kicked by a bear he thought he had killed. He was lucky he had a backup hand gun, but broke his wrist taking the bear down.

Just get the 300 Win Mag and not worry about getting the job done. While the other answers are well meaning, I doubt that they read your question without personal bias. My personal favorite is the 270 and 30-06, but I am not dumb enough to go after bear with anything less than a 200 grain 35 Remington and the 300 win mag will give you more range on the shot unless you plan on hunting the bear in a tree stand over bait.

Brown bear and Black bear look too much alike to take a chance that you think one is the other and not have a safety factor.

Good luck on your draw this year and good hunting.

Yes Bell kill over 1000 elephants using 6.5 and 7mm mauser and .303, but according to his own memory and some of his peers He also wounded as many that got away, I guess ethics didn't exist then... they hire porters as needed along the way in villages, keept on line by sudanese help, then on the way back in Zanzibar, sold the ivory and the porters to slaves merchants.!!
But I agree with the rest of your statement Colorado Redneck!!!

Jim,
I just picked up a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington for both deer and bear. The 30-30 will continue to work to take bear but the little extra weight and frontal area can't hurt with the 35 Remington.
