Rifle in 7.62x54r

So I'm in the mood to get a 7.62x54r rifle. Currently, the only choices i seem to have are the Mighty Mosin, and the PSL.

I know Izmash still produces SVD's and Tigr's but i cant seem to find them anywhere.

Anyone able to tell me a bit about the PSL? I have done a bunch of reading on them, and everyone who owns one likes it. I know that It is completely different from a SVD, but that shape... sexy...

and, if anyone knows where to get a SVD or Tigr, perhaps share the info with me?

just found out that the SVD and Tigr are not imported because they are not on some Uber List of importable guns.

Sad face :(

Anyone have a PSL that they could wax lyrical about? :D

Aleksandra, my 91/30, was the first rifle I bought for myself after nearly three decades of not shooting. She was produced in the Tula factory. Unless you thrive on the latest greatest guns and gear the 91/30 is a fantastic classic weapon. Simple has a beauty an worth all to itself.

Be careful and check that bore when you look. The Ruskies didn't exactly keep them pristine on the front line and that ammo was very corrosive. Bright bores are sometimes hard to come by but a slightly pitted rifle can still shoot rings around some of the modern bolt actions out there.

could try a waffen werks ak54r.
price wise it is a little on the high side, but quality seems good.
i have one and is fun to shoot! sure gets the looks at the range!wish someone would come out with aftermarket 20 round mags!!!!
i would buy another one if the price would go down quite a bit,but it seems to be about the same since i bought it a year ago.

When I was a teenager in the early 90's I saw a gunshow table absolutely overflowing with Tigrs, and the guy didn't want much more for them than the Norinco kalashnikovs and such that were also floating around that show...

My dad wouldn't buy one, although I told him in no uncertain terms how rare and cool and certain to rise in value they were. Turns out I was right.:D

I guess very few made it in during the brief window between when imports opened up and when it was shut down again re: the SVD and clones. The guy at that gunshow probably had 5% or more of toal US imports on his table.

I've wanted one ever since, but money and opportunity have never met. They go for a good buck these days and there are not many to go around.

Yeah.. the mosin is probably the best bet.

But, I am also eyeing a remington 870.

and i was thinking about this. quite hard, in fact.

I think im going to hold off for a while. I really want to wait for the tigrs to be imported again, then i may get one of those.

so, now i merely need to decide between the Mosin and the Remington 870.

thats such an easy decision, ill probably make it in a matter of seconds :P

Well what kind of shooting do you want to do? The mosin is going to be cheaper, and about as cheap to feed as a centerfire rifle can get. But shotguns are fun to shoot and versatile. Have fun deciding

see, i have a saiga (20 inch barrel, chambered for 7.62) and a CZ 97b.

I mainly want the Mosin for the 7.62x54r, and the history that it has behind it. The shotgun i kinda want to round out my armory.

my dilemma is which to get first...

SVT-40 7.62x54r rifle too.
Zastava M91 7.62x54r (imported yet ? )
SV-98 also 7.62x54r (not imported.)
If it was me, I would get a SVT for my self.:)

PSL

Here's a vote for the PSL, and some info too.

I've had one for 2-3 years now. To get best accuracy out of mine, I went to reloading for it. But lots of owners report good practical accuracy with various types of surplus x54R. By good I mean 3-4 MOA. Mine w/ reloads will shoot sub 2MOA for 3 rd groups. Some guys report better.

The com-bloc scope is neat and mine has held zero. The 8x version will get the most out of the rifle. The mount system is a bit twitchy, but mine straightened up after I understood the clamp and adjusted it a bit x a couple. The range finding feature is simple and again, pretty cool. I've had mine out in the weather, and although it did not get drenched as a test, it got wet and did not fog. The illum reticle still functions in mine, some do not.

Mine runs just fine and is reliable with the 10 and 5 rd mags that came w/ it. The rifles are unique and always draw onlookers at the range. Note that they are not Draganov's , but giant AK's. All in all they are a fair, semi-auto, full power marksman rifle.

I paid more for mine than I should have, but did get a supply of Wolf light ball ammo w/ it. The rifles are intended for the 150 gr "light" bullet and heavy MG slugs will supposedly have a detrimental effect in the long term.

This winter I worked up a range card for mine out to 600 yds, using my reloads. I could hammer a 20 inch gong at 600 easily once I got the dope. Groups on the steel appeared in the 12 inch range, ie about 2MOA, which is what the rifle does at 100 with my ammo. Running the scope up and down the range of adjustments made hits from 600 back easy.

I read the rifles came in to the USA from various sources. Romak3, SSG-97 and PSL are some of its labels. The current genuine PSL 's are supposed to be OK. Some of the US assembled rifles are not so good I hear. Mine is an IO SSG and I do not know if it was US assembled or what, but it is OK by me.

Everybody, (but me) has a Mosin. They are plentiful and affordable.
But I can do stuff w/ my PSL I do not think I could accomplish with an iron sighted Mosin.

besides the rate of fire, my sniper model 91/30 could probably do the same if not better. And it's just better, anyways, because it's mine. :D

The Finnish mosins are generally pretty accurate.
There is a lever action, M1895 I believe, that is in 7.62x54. Pretty pricey.
My PSL is pretty accurate but the bullet impact rises as the barrel heats up.
There is a Finnish target rifle that is in 7.62x54 called the M28/76.
And of course the SVT 40 and SVT 38 are semiautos in 7.62x54.
If you want a very accurate rifle and want to keep the cost under $300, you can't do better than the current crop of M39's. A supplier of these fine firearms is http://gunsnammo.com/.
I also see them at gunshows, often even cheaper.

Skip it, spend the money on a Garand if you want history and something that actually shoots. CMP has decent shooters for $500.

And yes, I've fired a PSL and owned a Mosin.

Chris- lol you just aren't a big fan of ComBloc weapons are you?? (My smilies aren't working so just visualize a rolleyes and big grin)
Is it much of a hassle to buy CMP guns? I don't know anyone who does, is why I'm asking.
