Rifle advice

Thank you for the replies!! It looks like the .270 with good quality ammo will do the trick, but as long as the wife doesn't find this thread I still may buy a new rifle.:D Is there any real advantage for the 7mm Remington Mag over the .270? How about the difference between the 300 wsm?

I have a 30-06 as my elk rifle, but if I had a .270, I would feel just as comfortable.

Unless you have a bell tied to your rifle that won't let you get within 500 yards of an elk, 270 is fine.

This is coming from a hard core .284 projectile fan...I doubt you'll see much advantage with the 7 mag over the 270 until after maybe 300 yds or so, and then prob not much. A quick look at any ballistic table will tell you.

What the 7 mag will do is let you shoot some slightly heavier bullets at a decent velocity, and the 300 WSM will allow even a bit more of the same, at the cost of more muzzle blast and a little more felt recoil from both.

It really is hard NOT to cover most of your bases as far as North American game goes with the 270, 280, 30-06, or 35 Whelen.
