Revolvers vs. Semi-autos...

I preferred revolvers for the longest time. I guess that's because that is what I learned to shoot with. The longer I've had my CCW license though, the more I've shifted to semi autos as practical carry guns. I don't find them as attractive as revolvers, gun a good one functions just as well.

I like both. I am not stuck on any style of gun. What I am stuck on is caliber I love the 357 magnum so that mostly means Revolvers but I do own a Coonan Classic and a Derringer in 357 magnum.

if they ever made a Glock or Glock clone in 357 magnum (not sig) I would likely get that too.

I believe in keeping it simple I have about 25 guns and all are 45/70, 357 magnum or 22LR or 12ga. I am not looking to add another type of ammo.

Revolvers for 22lr, I just can't get away from a 22lr revolver. (only exception are those weird ones, where you gotta take the cylinder out....)

I respectfully disagree with the OP. As I've said many times before, I was issued a revolver when I started my LE career, and would happily tote one as my duty sidearm again....so long as I get to pick the make and model. That said, on my own time, I've been known to carry both types of handgun, and feel perfectly okay with either one. For both HD and SD, or any other "practical purpose", never rule out the good ol' wheelie! "Old fashioned" doesn't necessarily translate to "useless".;)

I grew up shooting revolvers, never fired a semi until my enlistment in the US Navy. After serving 6 yrs in the Navy, was LEO for 32 yrs and carried Revolvers until my agency switched to Semi's three years before I retired. Now that I am retired I own seven handguns and only one is a semi-auto. I just prefer revolvers and feel more confident with them than Semi's. It's just my personal preference and has nothing to do with which one over the other is the better weapon.

Personally, I prefer revolvers to semi-autos, but that preference is dependent on the situation...

For strictly personal defense in places where anything can happen, I prefer my Glock 19. HD is the same.

For everything else, I prefer revolvers and own more of them than semi-autos.

For personal defense in places where the likelihood of something going wrong is limited, my 5 shot j frame is very convenient and I can fire it from a coat pocket.

For personal defense in cold weather, my 44 special revolver loaded with 200 gr Gold Dots.

For the woods, hunting and plinking...22 or 357 Mag Revolver.

Reason for this is, I handload and find it much easier to load for revolvers and not having to chase brass is a big plus. I can also shoot revolvers very accurately and fast under duress.

Single Six, I'm not trying to say that revolvers are by any means useless. Just that 2-3 times more capacity in a sidearm is IMHO very significant, and the reliability issue isn't what it used to be. I love me a good 357 mag, but I'd rather have my XDM with 16+1 rounds of .40 if I were gunning for my life. Unless, as stated in my first post, I were being charged by an angry griz. In that case my .40 would do little more than **** him off more.

A revolver can be useful, one advantage is the fact a lot of them can have multiple calibers in one cylinder(.45/.410,.357/.38) which allows for multiple uses.

That being said, I like semi-autos, higher capacity, faster rate of fire, and they have a lot of things you can do to modify or customize them, lights, lasers, different sights, threaded barrels, suppressors and compensators.

Which do you prefer, apples or oranges? It depends how I feel at the moment. Both do the job, but there are pros and cons to both.

Both they each have a place, even though most of my shooting is target or competition. Some times I feel like a revolver and some time I don't, or something like that. :D

RaskalKing: Point taken. Neither of us will be the ones to settle the "revolver vs. auto" thing, eh? On the other hand, regarding what you said about your .40 and bears...in the Zanesville, Ohio incident last year, one of the responding deputies dropped a charging black bear with a well-placed shot from his Glock 22 [and by well-placed, I mean that he shot the animal in the head].

If I was to go back into police work, I'd choose a revolver, probably my Model 28 which was my service revolver when I was in LE.

Did you do police (patrol) work in a small rural area just out of curiosity?

-Cheers

Which do you prefer and why?

And you mentioned something about BEARS?

I use both styles, revolvers, and semi-autos. Both have things about them that make it too hard to say "I want this over that, for this reason".
Double action revolvers are more versatile. I handload and can make powerful, or mild ammo with out worries about the gun working. And I do not have to chase all over to pick up my brass.
Semi-auto pistols provide more fire power and easier reloads. Certainly this is a plus when the fans are getting pelted with feces.
I like the right tool for the job over any other consideration.

Now about BEARS, I would not want to be depending on any of my handguns in the bear woods.

I like both, as long as they are metal and not polymer/plastic. I have a bunch of semiautos that have been 100% reliable, but when I shoot them, there is always a little bit of doubt it will fire more than once. I don't feel that way with the revolvers. I have total confidence it will fire six times.

I own and use both. I prefer shooting revolvers, maybe because that's all I used for the first 15-20 years of my shooting life. I'm more accurate with them and like not having to walk around looking for my brass (I reload). I primarily carry an auto in part becuase that's what is issued for work, partly because they provide similiar power in a more compact package. If I was told tommorow that I had to go back to the revolver for duty use I wouldn't skip a beat as long as it was at least a .357.

A user of both here as well....but my deep seated fondness is for the revolver.

There are advantages of both the rev. and semi-auto . For those not being able to find any advantages for using a rev. for SD, lights strikes comes to mind, for one.
Simply pull the trigger again on a rev. but a bit more time consuming with an auto. Too, I can pocket carry a holstered revolver and don't necessarily have to remove revolver from pocket or holster to fire. Try that with a semi auto.

Again, NOT trying to start a debate on which is better. Better is what you're best with. Just a couple advantages of the revolver.

Just that 2-3 times more capacity in a sidearm is IMHO very significant,

That statement is an age old myth that auto fans keep saying. I grant you that it’s accurate for someone going in danger that faces a firefight or a police officer that has to be ready for a fight every time he pulls a car over.
But for a “normal” person that carries a gun for personal defense that statement just doesn’t hold water. If you need to empty a weapon and reload to stop a fight, then who in the world are you in a fight with and where are you to get yourself in that kind of situation?
And if you get in that kind of a fight,,, I want to hear the excuse you or your lawyer come up with in court.
I have many of both types and I actually carry a Glock 26 most of the time but if I do go somewhere that I feel is not the safest place, than an S&W 21 (44special) is on my hip or a Charter arms Bulldog in 44.
You should carry what you feel most comfortable and proficient with, but to say that one gun is better due to the number of rounds, Nope doesn’t work<
