Revolvers firing autopistol catridges?

Is there any reason to prefer a revolver that fires a rimless autopistol cartridge like 45ACP over a rimmed revolver cartridge like 38 special and 357 magnum?

Moonclips, definitely. But also consider what you are going to use it for. No auto cartridge is going to beat a good, big magnum cartridge for pure power. Of course, for self-defense against two-legged predators, a big magnum may not be the
correct answer.

S&W makes 7- and 8-shot .357's that use moonclips. The 7-shooter is an L Frame, the 8-shooter is an N Frame, just like the .45 ACP. I like the .45 better for CCW but I like the 8-shooters better for ICORE competition.

Because I can.;) :D

Also for competition. A S&W 610, using .40 S&W ammo in moonclips is tough to beat. A 686 using .38 Special ammo will be slower to unload and reload, and that can mean the difference between first and second place.

My Springfield MilSpec .45, my S&W Model of 1917, and I all thank you, DAL. :)

I'd love to get a S&W revolver chambered for 10mm to accompany my EAA Witness, but they're all stainless steel, and I really don't like stainless that much.

...well, like Joe Hatley said, because of MOONCLIPS...wicked-fast reloads, no chance of an empty ending up under the extractor star and tying the gun up...PLUS, it's COOL to show up with a 9mm REVOLVER...or a 10mm REVOLVER...blows the minds of the uninitiated...and some of the initiated, too!!!....mikey357

If you handload you can push the power factor substantially. I can shoot 45 Super or 460 Rowland in my 625 without changing anything. I like the ability to shoot 45 ACP and 45 AR, but I'm lazy. With the auto-rims I don't have to load any monnies or RIMZ.

For those who like having a revolver & semi-auto, the revolver is a good platform for load testing - no brass chasing and the ease of loading one at a time or alternate chambers if you think your load is a tad warm.

45 brass if abundant anywhere you go.

Ammo compatability? Not a bad idea to have your main carry weapon and your BUG in the same calibers. And it's one less box to point out to the little (wo)man behind the sporting goods counter at Wal-Mart. :D

Moon clips are a pain to load and unload. The whole idea of the M1917 revolvers was to let them use .45 auto ammo in the emergency of WW I.

If I want a revolver, I choose one for a revolver cartridge.

While moon clips can be a pain to unload and load, there are devices out there which assist in the process. I for one would love to have a non j-frame 9mm revolver.

Get a super demooner and a remooner. They work great with my pre-25. Now I am trying out rimz clips and I think 50 of them will work just fine.

I have a Taurus 455 revolver in 45acp. The moonclips that Taurus uses are easy to load and unload. They don't tear up your fingers like the ones for the Smith 1917/625. Plus like everyone else said, Wicked fast reloads.

I have several Smith&Wessons that I have had fitted with an extra cylinder in either 9mm or .45 ACP. They are fun to play with, and for the hand loading shooter, they do offer some concrete advantages.
