Revolver Vs. Semiauto

Wheelgun/Moonclips

A great compromise is a wheelgun in a powerful caliber with moonclips.Reloading is as fast or faster than with an auto.Speedloaders just can't compete unless one is a champion level shooter, which let's face it-most of us are certainly not.:(

Revolvers are commonly available in calibers far more useful in the real world than semi autos. I own almost as many 1911s as revos but for CCW I will always choose a revo. The only advantage a semi auto has over a revo is that it's much easier to change out the barrel before the CSI goons show up. I have lots of spare barrels.

Although, I am a revolver man, I have to disagree with this statement.

38 special plus P compares to 9mm

357 mag compares to 357 sig

41 mag compares to 10mm

45 acp compares to 44 special and 45 colt

Now I agree that the power obtained in the 44 mag and larger are really only available in revolvers but I don't see how the 44 mag, 454 casull, 460, and 500 magnum are really all that useful in law enforcement when it comes to gunfighting.

I'm also a revolver man, and I totally fail to see any factual basis for this statement.

OK, I'll concede that revolvers are offered in more calibers good for hunting large game and protecting yourself against large, ferocious animals, and they offer the flexibility of being able to use lightweight practice loads in those calibers. They're also more common in small calibers useful for hunting varmints too tough to be taken with a .22LR (.22Mag, .32 Long, and .17HMR). However, for SD against two-legged varmints, I just don't see the difference. Commonly available semi-auto calibers duplicate the ballistics of all common SD revolver calibers. The differences amount to splitting hairs.

.45ACP is both a revolver and a semi-auto caliber... :)

Both are good

It just comes down to what you're more comfortable with. I can work with either but my wife prefers the revolver so that's what's on the nightstand :)

Make mine a wheel gun

I personaly own both but when it comes to concealed carry I perfer either my Taurus 3 inch Model 85 with Crimson Trace grips, or my 2 inch Taurus 44 Special. I don't feel under gunned with having only 5 shots in the gun. I carry 6 in my right pocket and if I ever have to use either the chances of having to reload are not that high. I learned a long time ago to hit what I am shooting at. Accuracy beats volume anytime!:)

You also have to remember that self defense it generally a CLOSE range shooting situtation. Very seldom is anything over 10 yards, and if it is then you get into the problem of if Deadly Force was required or not.

I grew up with revolvers. Put a revolver in my hand and I feel confident. I am not really happy with an auto. :( And those Glocks...I shot one at the local range. I want nothing to do with that trigger.

I shoot both, I am equally comfortable either way. I do like the higher capacity of the auto, however the longer I carry the harder it is for me to want to do anything but put that airweight snub with crimson trace grips in my front right pocket. It is so convenient. It is not so much a size thing as it is a size and weight combined thing. A light weight snub really is the sweet spot for carry.

Don't get me wrong like everyone else I adjust based on where I am going, etc. If it is a less familiar place or far from home a Glock 30 with 10 rounds of .45acp and an extra mag (maybe even a 13 rounder) goes with me. Otherwise I generally tend to carry a snub iwb or on hip with a Keltec P3AT or P32 to back it up. Just in case I need those extra rounds, and I pray I don't need the first 5.

Glock is like the revolver of the auto world to me and if they ever make a Glock 26 sized or smaller pocket 9mm or .40 that is 5+1 or better and only 15oz. unloaded (and as reliable as my full size Glocks and revolvers are), I will have a hard time not making that my primary daily carry.

Until then, 90% of the time I walk out the door I have a S&W airweight on me. YMMV of course but I actually shoot snubs very well at typical SD ranges (10 yards and less).

As a side note, I am impressed with how many revolver guys there are on this forum! :)

38 special plus P compares to 9mm

I think that line is a stretch. There's a big difference; 9MM kinda dusts .38 SPL. 9MM is the stronger cartridge by a good margin. Nevertheless, there's a Model 10 by my bed.

Revolver vs Semiauto

I carry either and always feel like I'm ready for whatever might develop. But at home, my HD gun is a S&W Model 13 in .357mag. I just think that a gun that's going to be stashed away for long periods is better w/o springs compressed in magazines.

Actually, the .38 Spl FBI load (158grn LSWCHP @ 890fps) compares pretty favorably to most 147grn 9mm loadings (typical velocity is in the 950-1000fps range) with the 9mm only having a power advantage of about 40-50 ft.lbs. Likewise, Buffalo Bores Heavy 158grn .38 SPL +P, when fired from a 3" or longer barrel, delivers nearly identical ballistics to their 147grn 9mm +P+ loading. So while it is true that the 9mm has a distinct advantage with lighter bullets, the .38 Spl can certainly give it a run for its money when heavier bullets are used in both.

I think I prefer a revolver...

... but it's a close choice.

My two basic self defense, hideout, daily carry handguns are a S&W M19 (4 inch) and a Colt Commander (LW) in .45 ACP. Whichever rings my bell that day, but the Smith is commoner as the bell ringer. Part of is I'm an older guy and a traditionalist.

If anyone is impressed, I've carried concealed weapons for over forty years now, both revolvers and autoloaders. I have not found a discernible difference in reliability in the big picture.

But since I'm only one guy, someone will label this information as 'anecdotal'. (www.instantrimshot.com)

yes :D
I like both - S&W 442 mostly. IMO, best belly gun out there. IF I were to carry a semi, it would probably be my .25 in the pocket or my G19 IWB ;)
