Review: Rossi mod 461

well i picked up one a few days back after i sold my S&W sigma 40ve. its .357magnum 2inch barrel, 6rnd cap.

initial thoughs: nice fit/finish grips are nice in my hands.

range: needs a hi-viz front blade or insert its hard to track the front sight for follow up shots and in dim lighting like the indoor shooting range i was at today.

i put 56rnds of HSM police ammu 125grain reloads. very clean and i got some decent groups at 15yards for the first time i shot a revolver in about 10years. smooth and nice DA trigger pull and SA is light and crisp.

so if anyone has any questions or anything please feel free to post up.

Other barrel lengths.
Other finishes.
How is it with 357.
Groups.
PRICE.

Picture is a little dark, but it looks good by what I can see.

Old 112

i only shot 38's today i didn't have much time at the range. they don't offer any others other then blue or nickle in this size.

.357's will be comming this weekend since i get paid friday its goign in for somekind of sight for the front blade. so if i can paint it myself or take it to a gunsmith let me know if there is a DIY for that.

i paid $269 plus tax. so 292.95 after tax. and like i said its been probaly 10 years since i last shot a revolver so once i got reaquainted with it i was getting 4inches at 15yards. but im used to 4inch barrel auto's so we shall see how that goes once i get some more rounds through it and get some more skill with it.

here is another B/W picture i just took.

I'm sure they're available in stainless, 112. Got a buddy up in AK that has one of these and he's quite satisfied with his; I'm certain he is shooting mags in his regularly.

I like these guns. They strike me as what the Detective Special might have evolved into, had Colt been concerned with such trivialities as keeping the civilian defense supplied with a good snub. I also like the fact that the safety on these is hammer mounted, as opposed to mounted in the frame. A little blue loctite would keep Murphy out of the works and insure that it never left the 'fire' position.

I'd like to see a set of Pachmayr Compacs for these.

My Rossi 462

It felt great in my hands when I first held it at the gunshop, and has remained that way. Even when I shoot Armscor 125 grain .357 JHP rounds from it, I find it comfortable.

I too "got some decent groups at 15yards for the first time i shot a revolver" and continue to get such groups.

I was initially apprehensive because it cost me much less than any of my other name-brand revolvers. It comes with a life-time warranty.

I do not feel apprehensive about it now.

Others might have had quite the opposite to my positive comment about it.

...and

I too have found the Uncle Mike's Sidekick [size 0] just right as a holster for it. I've also bought the HKS #10 speedloader for it.

I AM very satisfied with my 462.

I have a 461 and the gun snobs can knock them all they want but these are really good little guns. It has a nice deep blued finish and decent rubber grips that really help with recoil. They are also very accurate for a snub and even I can get some very nice groups out to about 15 yards. I haven't tried any .357 yet but .38+p is no problem round after round. The 461 sure isn't and airweight but it doesn't have the recoil of a lighter gun either. I think the 461 is a good carry gun (if you don't mind the weight/width) or an excellent glove box gun that you can count on to be accurate and reliable but you also won't have to get a loan to replace if it's stolen. I am not sure why no one mentions these as an alternative to the Smiths and Rugers for those on a budget. These newer Rossis seem to be of equal quality to a Taurus (which manufactures Rossis now). I suppose the dubious reputation of the older guns scares many away which is unfortunate.

I used to have an old Rossi .357 magnum stainless, and I liked it a lot. I'd rather spend tne money on a Rossi than a Charter or even a Taurus.

In fact I might just do that - I saw one like yours for $289.

thanks for the idea for the fingernail polish i will have to go steal one fromt he wife hehehe.

and i picked upt he uncle mikes 0 for $5 at the same place i got the revolver. it was in a MISC holster/mag carrier bin. so i can't go wrong there.

and yes i was aprencive at first after reading some posts but after shooting it i love it and im glad i got rid of my S&W Sigma 40ve. it was nice but heavy with a double stack mags. but atleast i can still shoot that since i sold it to my brother in-law.

no your not, taurus bought out Rossi a few years back i think. i know that for sure they do own them because it says "MADE BY BRAZIL BY TAURUS" on the side of the frame, and when you call the number in the box they pick up"thanks for calling taurus usa how can i help you"

461

I have a 461 that I have had for 4 years or so, and have been very vocal on this forum about the quality of my gun. I think it is a great gun for the money, and alot of fun to shoot! I am glad to hear others expressing the same opinion!

Welcome to the real world where a gun is evaluated for it's performance and not the price on the show room tag or the name on the frame. I am a fan of both Rossi and Taurus. I have a Rossi Model 851 SS with 4" barrel in 38sp, a Taurus 605 SS 2" barrel in 357mag, a Taurus Model 85 SS 2" barrel in 38sp, and just was notified my Taurus 905B 2" barrel in 9mm has been shipped. I might have $1400 in all 4. The three I now own have performed well over the years with the Model 85 only recently requiring any tuning. I expect the 905 will perform equally well.

Gun snobs be darned. I will buy what works for me. They can pay the $1,000+ for the name if they want. The target doesn't know what hit it, and Lord forbid the bad guys, should they be facing it, aren't likely to ask.

Shoot in peace!

Grandpa

thanks grandpa i full heartly agree with you. if you look at my collection i really don't care i shoot what i like and i like what i shoot. i do plan on adding a black rifle and a 1911 as well as a XD at some point in the future but not anytime soon.

anyways got a range report today. the only group i tried for was 3.5inches at 15yards. 7rounds for a good average rather then just the 6 in the cylnder. was HSM police reloads 125grain 38's. i will get some .357's for next week.

Rossi 461 2"

Hey just got back after firing 50 rounds of .38 special and 25 rounds of 357 magnum. This little gun is a blast!!! I've read reviews good and bad but honestly I shot from 5yards and then 10 yards and 15 yards and for fun went 20 ....having never shot a 2"barrel pistol before I feel it did really well. Once I got used to it and adjusted it was great. Very comfortable and accurate for fixed sights. I would recommend this gun to anyone honestly... The feel of the .357 rounds were amazing! Like a little hand cannon. Never been one to be addicted but this gun ..and I have others..really made me happy to shoot it and can't wait to go again next week!!!

Yo QuicksDraw,

Welcome to our World. Your 461 looks just like mine. Mine was tight as a drum and no rattle when I shook it. Used snap caps to get a feel for the DA in the beginning. What did you think of the DA and the SA? A bit stiff and incredibly super respectively?

Glad you found how accurate this puppy is. I was flabbergasted when I first shot it at 25 yards.
Try to shoot what you plan to carry in it. That way you'll have no surprises and I'm sure I don't have to tell you that.

The 38 sp P+'s are as easy as one could want and the mid range 357' mags are very tolerable. I do like the Speer ammo and also the Hornady. Magtech makes a decent 38 sp P+ 158 gr. rounded lead head but I found that it has more wallop than the 357's I was shooting.

May the Force be with you and happy shooting.

Doc

I know it's an old post, but I have the exact gun and I love it. It's a great little shooter and I wouldn't hesitate to get another one. My dad has the 6" stainless version and that's a great shooter as well. They have some pretty decent sights on them.

Here's a target my wife shot from about 18 yds with my little Rossi. And she rarely shoots, maybe once a year.
