I know this will sound strange on an all out survival Rifle Post, but in adition to what ever firearm you choose, a set of traps, and a Compound Bow of some type would be good to add to your survival gear. To eat you may need small game that you could catch with the traps, Quietly, and ofcourse the Bow would serve many purposes. You probably wont alwayse want to make a loud boom to let everyone know where you are.

You ain't kidding about the bow. I can reach out and touch 'em from 40 yards in a 12 inch diameter and I'm somewhat of a beginner. I've seen experienced archers nail the FITA target within the red from twice to three times that distance - Silence is priceless sometimes. ;)

It ain't always or even generally about the best survival rifle.

One gun won't do everything but If I had to pick one gun it would be a shotgun (12 ga. excessive recoil? really? hmmmm). If I can have 2 guns a 10/22 and a shotgun get the nod. If I could go with a 3 gun pack, a 10/22, a bolt action centerfire rifle (doesn't require a badge like "scout", plenty of sub $500 guns avaialble) and a shotgun. In the long gun world, what I can't do with those doesn't need doing.

I wouldn't want a .30-30 lever gun as my only gun but a .30-30 and a 10/22 covers a lot of ground and you could do worse for a 2 gun combo.

So look at what you have, buy accordingly.

Hey, that's cheating.
This was supposed to be about survival rifles.
But now that we're talking about bows and such, how about a slingshot?
With some practice, one of those can be a real good small game getter.
And definitely the bow.
But a complicated compound might not be as good a choice as a nice, simple longbow or recurve in a survival situation.

I'd look at a combo rifle/shotgun. Such as this Savage Model 24f.
http://www.gunshopfinder.com/savage/savage24F20.asp

The shotgun in this one is limited to 20ga. I've seen others that use .410.

The rifle in this one comes in either .22lr, .22Hornet, .223, or .17HMR.

In survival situations there are going to be a lot more chances to shoot small game and birds than large game.

Self defense is pretty darn nebulous. Are you defending a home, or are you ambling around the wilderness when the guys from "Deliverance" pop up?

Just can't stay away from SHTF stuff, huh?

Nine the Ranger, think about probable lifestyle and scenarios in the nebulous future, and then come back without the End. Of. The. World. stuff.
