Rental Report: G19-5 vs. P320 9C FDE

I've tried a number of others. None of them seemed notably worse. In my experience the people on the SIG forum can be... dramatic.

everyone who gets a Glock ends up changing out the trigger and the sights.

Glocks are pretty common here. I can't recall the last time I saw any LE officer in GA carrying anything other than a Glock and that translates into personal use as well. At least 95% of the guys I know carry Glocks. None of them have changed anything about them.

Just remember that guy is a salesman, he is trying to sell you a Sig.

I like a Glock quite well, but from handling, and dry firing the Sig I think it may be a winner too. I may end up with one, but not until they get the bugs ironed out. I'm reading about even more issues that have come up in addition to the trigger problem.

Went back to the indoor range with the plan to shoot my Shield 9 and 442 J Frame at closer ranges and work on improving accuracy. And to rent a G19 and something else to try out. Plan was to shoot the G19 and then a CZ75.

They had plenty of G4's but just one G5 that no one had rented, so I went with the G5. Much like last week when I shot the S&W 9C 2.0 and 2.0 45, I shot the Glock 19 much, much better than I do with my Shield. . . . . One issue with the Glock 19 G5... the indention/cutout right at the bottom of the grip consistently bit into my pinky on recoil. . . . .He pulled out a G4 with the finger grooves and it fit perfectly in my hands and felt right. Oh well, maybe next time, I'll try the G19 G4.

Planned to try the CZ75, but the RO encouraged me to try the P320 which he owns and loves. . . . .

I'll try some more rentals each visit as I need to keep working with my Shield and 442 before buying anything else.
I'm glad you're getting out to try more pistols. I know that you're relatively new to shooting, and there's no substitute for trigger time in figuring out what you like. Actually, there's no substitute for trigger time in many things in firearms . . .

As for shooting the G19 and the M&P 9c 2.0 better than the Shield, that's not a huge surprise. Bigger guns are just easier to shoot well than smaller guns, all other things being equal. They're heavier so they absorb recoil better; they have a longer sight radius; they have a longer barrel . . . What I would encourage you to do is to shoot the P320 and the G19 and the M&P 9c 2.0, all alongside each other. Shoot the P320 in a configuration as close in size to the others as possible. Then you'll have more of an apples-to-apples comparison.

Re: "everyone" changing out the Glock trigger. I didn't. I've got ~2k rounds through mine, and haven't seen a need to. Is it as nice as a 1911 trigger? Nope, and it's never going to be. I might swap the trigger out if I were building a target/competition/race gun, but the Glock trigger is serviceable for my needs (HD/SD, and other non-competitive shooting).

Definitely good to try a number of pistols before buying your first. On the other hand, don't go too nuts with it :)

After a while they all kinda feel the same. Maybe you'll have some magic moment where one gun wins your heart, but by and large they really aren't THAT different from each other. Both guns you tried are great options. So are other striker guns from S&W, Walther, Ruger, CZ, FN and just about any other maker that isn't Hi-Point. Buy any one of these, and you'll learn to become a competent shooter. And guaranteed, a year later you'll wish you could add THIS feature from THAT gun over there, and oh man why couldn't my Sig have a trigger guard more like that Beretta, etc. etc. etc.

I do like striker guns for learning to shoot. I started with a Springfield XD. Great gun (see above). I ended up liking hammer guns and DA/SA action. It's a challenge to get over that hump at first, but once you can shoot DA accurately, you can shoot pretty much anything.

Note: as I'm sure you know, one huge advantage to Glock and (less extent) S&W is accessories and aftermarket. Need holsters? Sights? Anything you can imagine? Someone makes it and can ship in 24 hours.

Buy a CZ P-07 like I did, and you'll be carving your own sights out of a bar of soap :D

My 2 cents on triggers...

Only a few I've tried have been especially bad. I never did like my XD trigger cuz it was kinda long and mushy. Glock triggers feel a little "twangy" to me. But those are all differences you'll notice when slowly shooting for groups, feeling every little piece of grit along the way.

When I've shot any of the pistols quickly, or in a competitive situation (IDPA style, etc.) I don't have time to notice the differences anymore. Trigger snobbery has its place but I guess I've found the obsession over triggers to be overhyped when considering them for defensive use.

I happen to have, in the end, decided to go with a Glock. While I get the concept of this concern I think, in the era of internet ordering, the concern is overblown.

If you have critical parts that fail on a regular basis the gun is not suited to defensive use. I don't think any of the guns in this discussion do.

I think he was talking less about critical parts and more about aftermarket, as he himself said. Pretty much any company that starts making holsters or sights or trigger mods starts with Glock simply because of the large user base. That said all of the pistols mentioned here are popular enough to have a number of options for all of those items.

True - my point was meant to be, and never articulated, that critical parts MATTER. The not critical parts such as sights and holsters... who cares if it takes two weeks to get?

I just didn't manage to articulate it.

Gee, I wonder why. Might it have something to do with a factory in a town called Smyrna? :D

I also am in a stage of comparing a G19 Gen 4 to a P320 Compact. But the Glock is at a real disadvantage as it didn't come from the factory with an installed red-dot sight.

OBTW, my 320 has the revised trigger design. I haven't yet decided which of those 2 I like better, when it comes to the trigger. I know I like the red-dot sight better than any steel sights, even the best ones with fiber-optics and tritium and bright paint etc.
