Remlin 1894 44 Magnum handliads

Can’t use Unique because I don’t have any. Powders are more scarce than primers in this neck of the woods. Yes, I’m using Winchester large pistol primers which are good for magnum use. Yes I slugged the bore.

"Hornady's 7th Edition uses the WLP for all 44 Rem Mag loads"

But you do have W296/H-110...
Will be running that today.

I am also using winchester large, marked for standard or magnum loads with h110/w296. I have been getting poor velocities and its less consistent than i would like it so far. I found some cci large pistol magnum primers i hope to test Wednesday to see if the primers are part of my problem.

What bullet are you using shadow9?

I have mostly been focused on 44spl as it will be by sons hunting load. Got out to do testing for the first time with 44mags last month. I suspect 2 possible issues that were causing my low velocities. Bad powder, It was older W296 from a friend already open. I have new H110 I am testing next outing. Or the Win large pistol primers (for standard or magnum) are not really good for magnum loads. I did get some CCI large pistol magnum, but wanted to try the powder first, then the primers.

I have been testing with the 240g Hornady XTP, they feed really well.

I also cast my own and just got the lee mold for 240g gas checked SWC that I am sizing to .430. They are getting gas checks and powder coated. I am testing some air cooled ones that should be around 13bhn, and some water cooled ones, that I have no idea of the BHN on. repurposed brazos 9mm bullets. I have some loaded up and am hoping to test them out Wednesday. Here is my current mold lineup, the 44 SWC are all the way to the right.

Same bullet as post #20, but with top-level H110. (Still 50yds)

At 40,000psi/approaching 1,900 fps, I think I'm finally over-driving the plain base.
But pattern is dependable, and look at the consistent velocity of 1,859±05

I'm in agreement with you . If I shot those groups at 50 yards , from a rest with a scope
... and thats what they looked like , I would be unhappy .
Both groups seem to be 2" X 3" ... First thing I would do is try some factory ammo just to get a baseline for accuracy . Then check the rifle all over , tighten screws , check barrel crown and then on to load development . Ballard rifling usually does well with cast ...
Maybe it's simply a matter of finding the right "magic" cast bullet load it likes !
Gary
Here’s some Herters factory 240 SJSP at 50 yds indoors, on a solid rest with 4.5 power scope. A couple of the bullet prints appear to have keyholed the paper.
The second (3 shot group) are MBW 250 grain WFN .433 diam gas checked over 23 grains of IMR 4227. Better, but stopped at 3 shots as I’m sure there would have been a flier.
I’m about to give up on this rifle.

maybe even wheelweight @11

That 22-superhard bullet alloy isn't really molding itself to the bore/groove at
anything but more pressure than the alloy can hang onto those grooves
Do you know of some outfit that sells 0.432 cast soft lead bullets? Other than cowboy load bullets, I’m not finding anything below BHN 16. I really don’t want to get into casting my own. Would rather buy something on the shelf.

I disagree, JustJake. Lever guns are not one MOA rifles, but I do like them. It doesn’t jam and probably does as it’s designed to do. Anybody that says my levergun drives tacs at 100 yards is just incredibly lucky. Marlin lever guns are not junk.
Is it the finest? No.
Does it work? Yes but don’t count on shooting .429 pistol bullets and be able to hit anything other than a minute of 8 inch pie plate at 100 yds. Factory 44 magnums just don’t work well, but hand loads are showing about 2MOA capability.
I’ll use a scoped bolt rifle if looking to shoot sub 1 MOA. Even in a decent bolt rifle I’ve seen 2-3 MOA with factory match grade ammo. But finding the sweet spot of sub 1MOA with hand loads is very achievable. Finding the sweet spot in sub 2 MOA is I’m trying to find in the Remlin 1894.

I sold my JM Marlin 1894 SR 44mg. With Hornady 240gr JHPs / 22.5gr H2400, it would shoot 1” at 60yds with a 3x scope. I run all Lyman 66 receiver sight on all my levers but scope them while developing loads. I have a few not D&T for scope or Lyman 66. I have tang sights on these but hunt with irons.
