Remington UMC ammo

In the 1000 rounds of UMC that's been through my G19, only one was a problem. The round jammed my gun up so badly, it took 2 people to rack the slide back and eject the round. When I examined it, the brass case was "peeled" back about 1/8". This was not a limp-wrist or any other shooter-induced jam, it just kinda happened. I still buy UMC today, if Wally World runs out of Winchester anyway ;).

Tankist was the squib load caused by no powder or just a failure to ignite the powder? In other words, was there a lot of unburned powder in the barrel and chamber?

I do not like UMC ammo. In my opinion, it is underpowered and inaccurate. Will not buy any more again unless the quality improves. Big D1

Everybody should be familiar with that 'pop' sound, and be ready for it during a shooting session. Even in a rapid fire string, you hear a low-powered 'pop' instead of what you're used too...STOP. I carry a little flashlight in my range kit to check the barrel just in case. Be especially carefull if you're shooting reloads.

You should have a cleaning rod with you too unless you want your shooting for that day to come to a sudden stop.

Chamber and barrel were clean. There was no unburned powder that I could see. the squib must have been caused by a low powder charge. Since UMC is pretty much underpowered ammo to begin with that makes it kinda tough to tell what you got. Regular jam or something else.

I ended up taking the pistol apart to make sure. When I shoved it to the propriators of the range, they didn't seem surprised at all. They, then proceeded to badmouth UMC ammo. After a couple of minutes of that one of them helped me clear the barrel. Bullet looks fine to me. Kept it as a reminder.

I had a round of 357 Magnum get lodged half way down the barrel of my GP100 - exact scenario that you describe, only there was crud and powder blown all over the place.

This occurred while pulling off 6 shots in VERY quick succession. I am thankful that the crappy round was the last one. <shudder>

After some grief with the mail and all that, Remington sent me $29.00
Why that amount? I have no idea.

I had a round of .357 get halfway down the barrel of my Blackhawk, real similar to what you described. If I had pulled the trigger again, BOOM! Glad I was paying attention and felt the abnormally light recoil. This was probably 7 years ago.

I have never bought UMC since, and I won't buy it again. I don't trust it.

How are we all with the school of thought that says if and only if TSHTF, and you have a squib, pull the trigger again and see what happens?

Sad to say it, but sometimes an explosion in your hand is an acceptable risk. Anybody prefer throwing the darned thing?

Wow, talk about dejavu. Today I went back to the range to finnish off what was left of my UMC ammo....

That's right, got another one. Same as the first one. In fact exacly like the first one. Weak pop, round about half way in, no powder anywhere.

It seems pretty obvious that I must have a contaminated batch or something of that nature. I think I'm going to put away what's left of the ammo for now. Oh yeah, and get started on writing that letter. I might as well start making plans on how I'm going to spend that $29 that I'm going to get from Remington.

That's it for me. Two squibs is all it takes.

UMC .40 180 - didn't push slide back hard enough, cartridges were striking slide at the bottom of the opening. No such problem with UMC .40 155 or 165. (Can't remember which.) I quit shooting 180 in any brand not long thereafter.

Yes, American Ammunition is crap. :D

As far as UMC, I have never had a problem. As previously mentioned, I would call or write them. They are sure to offer a compensation.
You are right Preserve I hate American ammunition. Loaded too "cold" and stovepipes because of it..I had recently bout some in .40 S&W and hated it..I have used UMC in .223 and that worked fine
