Remington R51 Redoux?

Thanks Niantician, that's the kind of information I was looking for. Replacements in 2015, I guess new generation 2 guns to the dealers will follow. Got time to decrease my short list before I add an R51 to it again.:D

Listening to the Ruger earnings call last week, the one bright spot the ceo mentioned was the LC9 striker fired pistol. In an understated way he mentioned Ruger's rigorous pre-release testing (IIRC 60,000 rounds, I doubt through one pistol) and how it differed from an un-named competitor who had to recall 100% of their most recent design.

Having been down the recall road with Caracal, I wish others on the path the best of luck.

Gotta love Ruger, for all intensive purposes they've got to be the most squared away American gun manufacturer right now.

Like others, I had HIGH HIGH HIGH (to the sky sky sky) hopes for the R51. I was just about to hunt for leather, but God I'm so glad I didn't. I just can't believe a company like Remington released what they did... the R51 wasn't supposed to be a target or hunting gun... it was meant for personal defense, a deadly serious business where one needs there gun to WORK and the garbage Remington was putting out the door... it really is disappointing that so many had in there hands some extremely poorly built guns with all the problems we've heard.

I still shudder to think there is probably a few people out there with R51s who haven't shot them much if at all and are carrying them for self defense.

Remington lost my business for sure, the way the botched the R51 release is just unforgivable. It really, really is. Now some may say "well it's a new production gun it will have problems" and that's true, but there were numerous reports of things like rear sights FALLING out of the dovetail OUT OF THE BOX, slides that were impossible (and I mean literally almost impossible) to rack without extreme force, and other things that don't speak to teething design flaws... but to an utter lack of any type of quality control or care for the consumer.

I think what they did to the consumer has been noted by many people, and they aren't pleased.

Having followed the saga of the R51 with great interest, I read an interesting article today... It's a long piece, but the part that really caught my eye shows up in the very last paragraph.

http://dailycaller.com/2014/11/02/special-forces-wives-on-the-range/

Remington gifting R51's to a group of Special Forces wives after a day of training... I can only assume that these are fully redesigned versions.

Article date: 11/2/14, date of event: 10/25/14

Perhaps R51 v2 is closer than we think. For the record, I'm not a hater of Big Green and hope they have the bugs ironed out and v2 performs as advertised/anticipated... I'd go for one.

Very interesting... There were 16 wives there, so I assume they gave out 16 R51 pistols. Hopefully, we will hear something soon.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I assume the replacements will have entirely different serial numbers. If that is true, won't they need to send them via FFL? When I returned mine, they did not ask for a FFL dealer of my choice for my replacement pistol.

I still like the idea of the R51, and if I see one on the shelf, I'm likely to take it home.

Remington hasn't had the best record with new designs lately (the 105 CTi shotgun was abandoned after a design tweak, and now this R51), but they have also had some successes (the Versa Max seems to have worked fine).

It's also important to remember that other companies have had their own issues with product launches too... Glock's gen IV wasn't without trouble, Ruger has had about as many recalls as GM (or so it seems), and so on. There's just not been many trouble free launches by anybody lately. I wonder how much of that is the internet letting dissatisfied people talk to each other more (where previously people might have thought their issues were isolated) and how much is the reduced quality control testing and individual assembly attention each gun gets nowadays.

I'm still a believer in Big Green... they've done right by me on the Remingtons I've bought, so I'd still be interested once the new version starts shipping in volume.

Model 12win... I hate to call you out but its "for all intents and purposes" Everyone seems to get that wrong. I only correct you cause I saw a boss use the wrong terminology at a meeting and he got laughed at.

Wheelie, With all the bashing Remington receives on the forums it is nice to see another who will still support the company if a particulary desired product is produced. This is a complex world and us traditionalists have a difficult time understanding the need to produce a product and stick the parts in a boat for a trip to a foreign country to assemble and return for sale. Sometimes a company will fall on it's nose with a product, Remington seems to be attempting to resolve thr R 51 boondoggle and if they are released once again I shall place my order. My Remington R1 pistols are a delight to fire and being true to John Browning's design function just fine...the R51 is more radical and I hope it eventually displays a record to overshadow the original failings.

I read a letter from Remington copied on another forum. They told an R51 owner questioning the replacement time that they now expect to deliver them in mid 2015. No reason was given why they missed the October 2014 date.

A little bird who claims to have inside knowledge tells us that like most gun companies, Big Green will be rolling out some new products at this year’s SHOT Show. And our enterprising little avian has sent us some spec sheets on three of the new guns. One’s a budget priced full size .45 to go up against the likes of a Ruger SR45 or a Springfield XD. Another is a pocket .380 in the style of a Smith Bodyguard or a Ruger LCP. The third, however, is – drumroll please – the R51. Yes that R51. OK, so it’s not really new. Unless it, you know, works this time. By looking at the promo material, it appears to be basically unchanged from the original. Will it perform better than last year’s version? Inquiring minds are dying to know . . .

I hope they get it right this time but even if they do a lot of people won't give it a look because of the disastrous first roll out.

I'm still hoping they get it right. I'd like to try one... but I'll probably have to wait and see how this second generation one works out.

It has all the features I want in a 9mm compact carry gun.
I really hope they get it right. Have to figure with the attention the failure received.
They would have to be complete morons not have had 3 people go over the new ones before they get released.

So I figure, best chance for the best gun is to buy as soon as V2 comes out.

I will ether be a winner or a sucker...
