Remington R1 Stainless --- under $500 out the door!?

Anyone know anything about installing a longer trigger on one of these Remington R1's? I'm not sure I'm going to care for the short trigger. Just wondering how much that might cost, and if I should consider doing it myself. Also, can I get some info on the Series 80 stuff I'm hearing about the R1? I don't know much about any of that.

I bought a R1-S just like the one pictured above back in Feb. of this year and I believe after the $75.00 rebate I've got right at $530.00 total in it.....if I could get another one locally for the $449.00 OTD price I'd own another one.

I've put around 150 rounds of my Remington 230 gr. FMJ ball reloads through it so far and I'm happy with the gun, it's accurate and no problems cycling.

Until I'm satisfied that Remington has figured out how to machine the frame bridge and frame abutment surface correctly I wouldn't buy an R1 for $50.

Ok, so you want a bunch of "gun guys" to tell you not to buy the gun.../ ..no, and I won't do that either ...but...

I'm seeing a few of them around my local range...overall I think the comments I hear are pretty good / some of them didn't have very good triggers - but it depends partly on what you're used to. No question its an entry level 1911...are there better guns out there for the money / you have to decide. If the frame to slide fit is good...it should be ok ( 25,000 rd gun / 50,000 / I don't know...) no way to really tell.

To compare it against a gun ....I think the Springfield TRP is one of the best values out there right now... stainless or black / ambi safety / mag well / night sights / checkered front strap.....and they're about $ 1,450 in my area....and its a lot of gun for the money in my view.

Are either of them a Wilson Combat 1911...no, not even close / but they are also not $ 3,500...

Save your money for something down the road, buy this....I don't know..../ but no matter what, have fun with the process !

Aguila, I've been reading up on them and that sounds like a fairly common problem, I'm going to ask for multiple samples in an attempt to pick the best of the bunch.

BigJimP I will have fun with the process, as long as I get a quality product I'm sure I will be very happy.

While I have the money, I really have no business spending $500 on something I don't need... at this time.
When things go south, guns and ammo will be worth their weight in gold.

I just installed a Wilson Combat lightweight extended trigger on my R1 this morning. Installation was pretty simple. They do require a little fitting. There is no vertical movement like with the stock R1 trigger.

The Series 80 has the firing pin block/safety. It has two armatures, one mounted on the sear pin, the other mounted on the hammer pin. These work to depress a plunger in the slide when the trigger is pulled. This plunger has a cutout that allows the firing pin to move past it and strike the primer. If the trigger is not depressed, the firing pin cannot move past the plunger. This is supposed to make the 1911 a drop safe firearm.

Thanks IdahoG36 :)
That looks nice. I think if I install a longer trigger it will probably be a solid to stick with the GI style. But yours looks good, and I've seen a lot of others that look good with only minor modifications.

I got mine today... but it was a little rough going initially. I went to Sportsman's Warehouse early this morning. Got to the firearm counter expecting to have plenty of samples to chose from. They had NONE! No Black, No Stainless.

Turns out I completely ignored the dates in the newspaper add... Yes, it was a Memorial Day sale, but it ended on Memorial Day, I thought it started on Memorial day. (Wow! Next time I'll pay closer attention to the dates! The sale had been going on for over a week.)

So I called a bunch of other stores trying to see if anyone else had them in stock. (I talked to one guy at a Sportsman's Warehouse in Colorado Springs and he said they had sold over 100 of them since the sale started.)

I ended up at Bass Pro Shops and they did a price match for me. It took a lot of convincing on my end because they just couldn't fathom how low Sportsman's price was. Initially they were telling me things like... "Well, the ones from Sportsman's are factory refurbished so that's why they can sell them so cheep." and "The one's from Sportsman's share the same trigger as the Remington R51, and they recalled the trigger on the R51 so they had to recall the R1's too and replace their triggers, now they are selling them after installing the new triggers for less." I don't know what to believe. (I went to a *Gander Mountain* store before Bass Pro, and they said "Yes we price match, but we will NOT because that price is bellow our cost.")
Finally after spending some more time talking to the guys at Bass Pro Shops one of the salesmen said "We called Springfield and they said to go ahead and honor the price." I can only assume he meant Remington :o

I ended up getting both. :D
A stainless and a standard black. I got the feel of the slides and triggers on about 5 or 6 of them and I feel like I got the best two out of the bunch.

I've cleaned them and put them away, also filled out my rebate paper work which I will mail out tomorrow. I hope they give me 2 rebates back; $75 for each pistol, I don't see why they wouldn't. I'm mailing Both rebates separately.

I'm not sure when I will get to shoot them, but when I do I'll post my impressions if anyone is interested.

I'm very happy that I bought 2. After cleaning them, working the actions and doing some thoughtful dry firing, I think they feel and look GREAT! I easily get the impression that they are better guns than my RIA 9mm 1911 and I paid $420 out the door for that and I still feel like it was a great deal, it is a good gun! I think ending up with a Black and Stainless R1 for an average of about $460 a piece is going to prove to be a wise decision. :) They both have flawless finishes and no machining marks. I have confidence that they will both be reliable and accurate... but there's only one way to tell! More to come........................

P.S. On a side note. I've wanted the Ruger SR1911 since it came out. I've handled a few in the stores, one of them today. If I were to compare the ones I've handled against the two R1's I chose today, I would say that the R1's have a better feel to them in regards to their slide to frame fit and feel. But that is really based on limited experience. I'm just glad the Remington's have become my preference over the Ruger so far, especially considering the price! Also, if anyone is wondering... Yes, the R1's look MUCH better in real life than they do in some of the pictures I've seen on the internet. If you see some real nice looking pictures of the R1, you can be sure that they look that good in person.

I had a chance to buy a basic black Commander R1 at the first Sportsman's Warehouse I went too, but it was $575 or so before the rebate, and I felt like I needed to continue the search for the full-sized ones. Also, I didn't care for the trigger on that particular one.

Straight from Remington regarding the Remington R1.

"These guns are built in our manufacturing facility in Ilion, NY."

That's quite a story, mellow_c! I'm glad you were able to get the price match on both guns, it would have been a shame to miss out on this deal especially since you were on top of it early on.

I also got one late in the sale, don't know why I dragged my feet so long. The R1 stainless was long gone but I got the next to last blue R1, fortunately the model I wanted anyway.

These are way, way better than the $400/$450 sale price!
