I prefer the 870 but it comes down to personal choice. One thing to keep in mind is that you definitely want an 870 if you are going to have a pistol grip tactical style stock. I don't like them, but again that is a matter of your choice.
The reason is if you have a pistol grip it is very difficult to use the Mossberg tang safety.

Both are great shotguns. What put the 870 on top for me was the Mossberg Safety doesn't work well with a pistol grip and the loading mechanism on a 500 causes you to lose 2 vs 1 when combat reloading 2 slugs.

Personal choice..

Both the 870 and the 500/590 are great shotguns, and you wont go wrong with either one. Both have a huge number of bolt on options.

I bought a 500 over a 870 for 2 reasons.
1. I liked the position of the safety on the Mossberg.
2. It was a bit cheaper.

Otherwise if someone handed me a 870 I'd feel just as safe and confident with that as I would with my 500.

• Mossberg comes with multiple (3) choke tubes, Remington only one (1).
• Mossberg® is the shotgun the US Military uses.
• Mossberg® is ¼-½lb lighter.
• Mossberg® is less expensive by $25-$40.

Remington has gone downhill----AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME---Mossberg is the only choice. Maybe sooner or later Remington can get their act together again.

The 887 was never a viable choice---if you want it in plastic---get the Benelli.

When you say 870 are you talking 870 Wingmaster or Express.
The Wingmaster is way better than all of them in my opinion.
The 870 express is a good gun but comes no where near the Wingmaster.

I've posted this before:

We retired two Remington 870 Wingmaster riot guns from my first ship. They had, no kidding, more than 250,000 rounds catalogued, EACH. They had very few small parts replacements, and still ran fine. I would say, under every circumstance, the 870 is the best pumpgun in the world.

I have a 870 left handed Wingmaster And I love it! Shot a perfect round of skeet with it on more than one occasion, and it has a modified choke.

I prefer the 870, but there's nothing wrong with the Mossberg, either. As for the 887, I don't know. Never had need or occasion to handle or shoot one.

The shotgun is the most versatile firearm. With that in mind, the Mossberg 500 is the most versatile firearm on the planet. You can get damn near anything for this shotgun. You can set it up as a home defense weapon with a pistol grip and folding stock, add optics and flashlights, rails. The Mossberg FLEX system gives you an assortment of stocks, fore ends, and recoil pads with tool-less locking system so you can change it out easily for your current need. But the thing I like most about the Mossberg 500 is the option to use the factory barrel, barrel chokes, put a rifled slug barrel on it and a scope, or switch out the barrel and make the thing a muzzle loader! Like I said... If shotguns are the most versatile firearm, then the Mossberg 500 truly is the most versatile weapon on the planet. And with the money you save buying a Mossberg 500 over a Remington you can afford some of these sweet accessories.
