Remington 783?

FiveInADime,

I for one appreciate your honest down to earth comments. People read these forums and take the grandiose comments as gospel truth. It's nice to see a little realism inserted from time to time (especially like you said, for someone new who looking for an economic hunting rifle to take out a few times a year). Not to mention the anonymity of the Internet makes it all too easy for some people to act like turds.

If the barrel is not replaceable I would not even consider it. To me its likebuying a car with the wheels riveted on so you cant replace tires.

A new barrel costs almost as much as a new gun

How many barrels have you worn out and replaced?

The 783 is a entry level hunting rifle, designed to give a beginner or low budget hunter near Model 700 level performance at a lower price point. It is not a 700 and isn't supposed to be.

I definitely agree that the abilly to change the barrel makes this rifle more desirable than the 770, but most of the people who buy this rifle will never change barrel.

Oh, looked a little closer Mojave...

:)

What I didn't mention was that FiveInADime is from 50 yards or less with my .22LR rifles. Although, it has happened by coincidence with my centerfires a time or two. I have no illusions that my meager equpiment is capable of custom rifle accuracy/consistency.

I own a custom Remington 700 Varmint in 308. I own a Remingtom 700 SPS in 270. I own a 783 in 308. The Varmint rifle will ring steel at 1000 yards as a matter of routine. look at the 270 as a POA hunting rifle to 250/300 yards. But I see things in this new 783 that's got me inching to try some bench work. I had that rifle field stripped today and I've never seen a stiffer plastic stock and it has two pillars bedded in it. The barrel is not only free floated but it is a magnum contour; a pretty beefy barrel. And this trigger, now set at sub 3 pounds, may prove to be its greatest asset in that it has no take up at all, it just breaks right there on the spot. Scope will be here Wednesday. It will certainly get a workout over the Thanksgiving holiday.
