Remington 770. Opinions?

I want to hear opinions on the 770. I have one in .300 win mag and have killed many deer with it. I've read a bunch of bad stuff about these guns and I'm thinking that those reviews are from people that haven't actually fired the gun, or people that have just heard stories. Mine was purchased 5 years ago when they cost closer to $400 than $300. My bolt seems to be great. My buddy bought his before me and did have a problem with his magazine, but remington happily replaced it for free. Has anyone else had a pleasant experience with it like I have?

I'm probably the only guy here with a good 770 experience.

First off, it was a gift or I probably never would have owned this rifle. Mine is a 7mm mag. I've bedded the action, floated the barrel, tuned the trigger, polished the bolt and mounted a Nikon Monarch 3 4-16x42.

I've never had any reliability issues of any kind and it will shoot 1/2 moa with handloads. It shot under 1.5 moa out of the box with factory ammo. Not bad for a $250 gun with a little "Do It Yourself" gunsmithing.

Where did you find one for $250? Used? They sell for $300 here new but when I purchased mine it was closer to $400. I like mine.

Traded for one a while back in 7 mag cause it had a nice scope on it. Put a cheap scope I had laying around on it, sighted it in, and never used it since. I loan it out to people needing a gun to hunt with, in fact, it's with a co-worker now who was without a rifle. Anyway, never had any issues with. Kicks like a mule though and that stock sure is ugly.

I got one here that I will sell to you for 320.00! That's what I paid for it! I'll even send you the broken bolt, and you can fight with rem. about fixing it! Right now ,I have a hell of a lot of money wrapped up in a club! I put 20-30 rounds thru it before the bolt handle broke off, so the barrels still good!
Oh, its a 243! I wanna put a custom stock on my mosin, it shoots better than the remmy, but I don't have the money, so come an get it!

Boomer, you sure did sink a lot of work into it to get a good gun! Yeah, this mag. don't work worth a darn either!
First time in my 51 years I ever bought a new gun and I'm sorry I did! Rem. says they are moving to PA., well, I say "SEE YAAA!!!" Don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out!

I really don't understand how a bolt handle can break. Mine is all peachy. I'd gladly buy it from you for the right price.

320.76is what it took to get it out the door back in march of 2013! You get all it came with! A cheap scope, a mag that don't feed, and a broke bolt!
You pay shipping too!

its a good gun for what its worth.

To many crackpots on the forums cannot comprehend what the gun is. Its a GOOD gun. The magazien needs to be broken in a bit but thats common, even with magazines that come in those bar rifles.

bolt can be sticky, it wasnt designed for use in a mad minute contest.

Why would someone buy a broken gun for what a new one can be purchased for? Not to mention having a warranty in their name. Keep it bud. I'd still like to know how a bolt handle breaks.

I bought one for my son to hunt with in .243 and have shoot about 100 rnds and it will put 3 shots in the touching at 100 yrds with my hand loads. And I haven't done anything to this gun besides take it out of the box

I hear ya, but why should I take a beating on it too? Bezour seems to think they are the greatest gun, I say, pay up, prove it! I got a good 3 inch pattern at 100, but I didn't have time to work a good load for it cuase the handle broke off! The trigger pull was too hard to get a smaller pattern. I must have got the gun made on Friday, or with Mondays hang-over! There was no "mad" charging on the bolt, I was just opening it for another round!
It would be cool if there was a remmy person on this forum, someone with some pull! I'll try them again after x-mas, if nothing then, I'll get a lawyer!
In the mean time, I'm gonna bad mouth them to everyone I can! If I could post pics I would!

Show the pictures.... Keep in mind I was seeking people with positive reviews. You must work for browning or something. You didn't makes custom bolt out of aluminum foil did you bud? I don't understand how a thick piece of metal breaks. I've heard bad reviews as far as magazines go, and a sticky bolt, but I haven't heard of a piece of thick metal breaking. Did you cut it with a torch?

The 770/710 rifles generally work. They are as accurate as any, but are a poor value in the long term. I'd never recommend someone buy one. They are what I call a "disposable" rifle. They are made for the guy who shoots a box or 2 of ammo at most per year. With that type of use they will generally provide a user many years of satisfactory use. If you shoot a lot, don't expect long term performance.

They have 2 issues. The first is that the cost to repair one often exceeds their value if anything breaks or wears out. If that happens you simply throw them away instead of repairing them.

The other issue is virtually non-existant resale value. I wasn't always able to afford a really nice gun and bought several budget guns when younger. But these guns kept their value and allowed me to sell or trade them for a fair price and upgrade over time. None of the local gunshops will even talk to someone about trading in one of these. Pawnshops turn people around at the door and want even talk to them about pawning or buying one, at any price.

I fully understand that everyone cannot afford a $1200 Kimber. But there are several options out there selling for about the same or even less. They are better rifles that will have some value if someone decides to trade up to a better rifle someday. A $300 Stevens 200 will outshoot the 770, hold its value, and barrels, stocks, triggers and other custom parts are available if an owner chooses to turn it into anything they want. None of that is even possible with the 770. Right now the $350 Ruger American is the best of the budget rifles.
