Remington 700 opinions/advice

My grandfather has an old cdl 700 that is older than me. The gun is atleast 35 years old if not older. He has never had the gun go off when taking the safety off. I tried getting my 700 to go off on its own but it wouldn't. I've seen the cnbc episode bashing the 700, but I've also seen the follow up where the truth came out. I believe what causes the guns to go off on their own are people messing with the trigger to give it a lighter pull. That's just my opinion.

The .243's a great round. Had a classic Win 70 heavy barrel varmint version in .243 that shot really good. David Tubb was the first to use the .243 Win in competition and won a bunch of matches with it. His only comment bad about it was the two barrels he wore out shooting it lasted about 1500 rounds each with normal, max safe loads. That barrel life number's about what other got, too.

Used conservatively, your's will do just fine.

I see you're in Alabama, I'm in Georgia. For some reason, most around us think it takes at least 300mag to kill a 180lb Whitetail. That 243 will do great, be cheaper to shoot, and not knock you out of a tree.

I'd like to see what some of the rednecks I know would want against an elk or moose. Probably a 50bmg.

I hunt with a .300 mag and there is a reason for it. Our food plots are on a big hill, I prefer to call it a small mountain. I don't want to have to slide down a steep hill and then drag a deer up it. The .300 win mag is great for busting through the shoulder bone and dropping them in their tracks. As far as the elk hunting goes I shot one in Wyoming with a .270. Shot in the neck at 410 yards.

Glad to see you have a reason to use a magnum. I know a guy that seems to go to a bigger gun every season after one gets away. He currently uses a 338winmag. Can't seem to convince him he's just hitting them bad. Too many people want the gun to do the work.

No one answered the gentlemans question about how to find out when his Remington 700 was built. I have the same question, is there a site where we can find out when our mod. 700's were built?

I've killed deer with a .22 and a .17hmr. I didn't buy the .300 mag for the heck of it. It serves a special purpose.
