Remember the dream gun? Here it is!

Kilgor-

Because it is not about having a gun that really performs better, it is about having a gun that gives you the warm fuzzies.

And, price determines value...

Custom 1911's make a great hobby.

Honestly though, that is a really nice pistol! I would not want to bash your choice. I am probably going to order myself a nice custom 1911 just for fun.

As to whether Glocks will be gone in 20 years, that is just silly. Glocks have forever changed handguns, and that is evident by the entire gun market, including the many hi-cap and plastic 1911's that are coming out now. Only time will tell, but I predict the Glock to be around anf popular for as long as pistols are available.

Oh Lord not another one of these museum piece lovers, this is getting silly. If you think that is the best gun ever I have an Edsel in the garage you may want to enter in the Indy 500, and an old tennis racket that's really John Lennon's guitar that I'll let you have for $500.

All these "Custom" 1911's look the same as the original gun anyway, which isn't saying much. They change the checkering on the frontstrap, put a piece of kiddies flourescent drinking straw on the front sight, widen the ejection port so there's almost no slide left, slap a stupid logo on the hand crafted balsa wood veneer $100 pimps grip panels, widen the v-notch with a craft knife and call it a Rapid Acquisition Tactical Speed Sight and "hey presto" another superb custom like the Thunder Ranch Special is born, wake me when it's over yawn, yawn, ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz........., personally I'd rather be armed with a pointed stick and some bad language. A compulsary "1911 buy back and melt down into railway tracks" program is the ONLY new gun law I would support. It's a miracle these things even work, I believe the only reason they weren't added to the junk guns listing is because the BATF couldn't decide what they were called, I believe the nearest they got was a Charles Daly Wilson Combat Commander V10 Kimber Colt Thunder Ranch Special, couldn't we just give them all a simple name like Lemon or Herbert ?

Please can we have a 1911 only thread, I'm afraid that we could lose new members who may mistake this for a history web site.

This is the most fun I've had for ages (I know, I need to get out more) and if it doesn't get the Colt Caveman brigade hopping mad nothing will ;)

Keep on truckin' you 'ol timers.

Mike H

I don't know, the last I heard was that the FBI had a contract with Springfield- for their agents to carry one of those "museum pieces."

If you are a true gun enthusiast, you have to respect the 1911- don't have to own one though. Just my opinion.

Blunder it is a beautiful Gun, seeing it will give me something else to dream about.

Happy Shooting!

Gov. models give you a lot more opportunity
to practice malfunction drills..(See my
posting-("I HATE when that happens.") in
the Handgun Forum.

Seriously, I've given my Glock a vacation
this year and intend to shoot/train with
my 1911 exclusively during 2000.

I figure if I can shoot my Gov 45 well,
my Glock 19 should be a piece of cake!

Blunder, you have crafted a lovely piece of gun art. A tasteful combination of the old and the new. A reflection of your individual personality and a monument to John Moses.

However, tis indeed not a survival weapon. A Glock, on the other hand, is a multi purpose survival weapon. Sort of the combo knife of the gun world. A Glock not only shoots ( usually ) but you can use plastic shavings for fire starter. Or you can slice it and make Glockworst sandwiches.

Nikita Khrushchev predicted confidently in a speech in Bucharest, Rumania on June 19, 1962 that: " The United States will eventually fly the Communist Red Flag...the American people will hoist it themselves."

I used a Glock once, no twice, as a door
stop and a hammer. Just kidding Glock people
but again there never has been a pistol with
the feel, looks and natural pointing ability
of the 1911.

Blunder,

Very nice.

Mike H,

Why isn't ugly reason enough not to own a Glock? I didn't marry an ugly woman. I don't buy ugly vehicles. My house is not ugly and neither are my pistols.

I've always been interested in all the posts here about 1911s that need to be worked on to operate correctly or reliably. 'Never had one. 'Never shot one. 'Never even seen one. I'm starting to think it's a rumor.

When a 1911 owner explains why he owns a 1911, he/she can never give enough good reasons to convince a Glocker, and there lies the problem. This ain't religion. 'No reason for a crusade.

I own 1911s 'cause I like 'em. I don't own a Glock 'cause I don't want to be seen with one. 'Simple as that. Someday I might change my mind. I've seen a couple I like. BUT, it most assuredly would be a tool and nothing more. My 1911s are much more. I am very fond of them, personally. I can't imagine feeling that way about 9mm Tupperware.

I can't imagine owning a pistol I don't love to own. Get it?

A Glock makes your gun illiterate but not anti-gun friends say "NEAT!" but has no affect on other shooters...a nice 1911 makes gun illiterate friends say, "Why?" but your fellow shooters can't stand to be around you because they're so damn envious!

Personally I like the looks of a Glock. I believe 1911 owners have no taste in firearms. This argument is stupid. I am sorry that I ever started it. You buy what you want for twice the price and then spend all the money to keep it running plus lose all that shooting time due to being in the shop. I'll buy my Glock, reloading equipment, range membership, NRA membership, and targets for the same price. I'll be the guy out shooting while your at the gunsmith.

Geez, Mike H, don't hold back, buddy!

Every time I shoot one of my three Glocks, I think, "This is great! The best!"

Everytime I shoot one of my four 1911s, I think, "This is great! The best!"

I am well-armed with either. So pick whatcha like and shaddup.

Sensop,

Fair point. But what makes you think I like Glocks either.

It's not so much that I dislike the 1911, as that I acutely dislike single action pistols unless they are for plinking only, it's just my preference but I don't see single action and self defence requirements as being mutually compatible, a little like a love affair between Rosie O'Donnell and "Two Wheels On My Chariot" Heston.

Arizona Eric - The switch between the two trigger actions could just catch you out in a stressful situation, you don't want to spend 2 seconds figuring out which gun you have today. But hey, if I lived down there in Rattler country I'd be more concerned about choice of sunscreen than the need for a firearm anyway ;)

Regards,

Mike H
I am to single action what Moriarty was to Holmes

nice gun how does it shoot? I would like to have one of those myself. would go real nice right beside my G30 in the gun case. At least i know that they wont argue.

Nice. Can't anyone just sit back and say that's real nice. Kind of like when a freind or neighbor brings home their new car and proudly show it off to you. Do you have the heart to tell them it's an ugly peice of s*** or do you congratulate them and admire their pride in their new accomplishment. Let them be happy and proud. What's to be gained by shooting that moment down. Those are the special moments in life. They are too few and far between as it is.

I do have to say though. There is really something to be said for a fine peice of machinery that has been skillfully crafted from a block of metal and refined by trained experienced hands massaging the pieces to a beautful fit and finish. That touch can not come from a mold. It's and art.

I like the analogy about the old cars. However, one good reason for a kit car might actually be the fun and accomplishments of building a kick a** cobra. Or anything. There's a certain pride and feeling of accomplishment in that. Fewer and fewer people today have any comprehension of the satisfaction one gets out of doing it themselves. Besides that, there simply aren't enough of them to go around and the cost of a genuine Cobra can be $200,000. The kit will probably turn out too be a better car anyway.

Hasn't anyone ever messed around with hot rods and muscle cars? Not everything is done out of practicality.

I'm one of those guys that actually enjoys spending the day working on the boat as much as sailing it.

Maybe I'm wierd, but I actually enjoy tinkering with and maintaining my firearms and other toys as much as using them.

Blunder, that's real fine and you should be proud of it. And just think, there isn't another on the planet exactly like it.

Gentle, please. Each to his own. If glock is what floats your boat, then so be it. And the same goes for 1911's. It's a matter of personal choice. Utilitarian, custom? It's academic. It's what ever an individual feels suits his needs and desires.. It would be a boring world if we all liked the same stuff. I hope you are happy and enjoy your new custom 1911. Just my 2 cents worth.

Glocks are like mopeds, fun to ride, but you would not want your buddies to see you with one :)

Okay, that was originally a 'fat chick' joke before it was a 'Glock' joke.

As you can tell by my name, I love Glocks, but I can still joke about them.

I have had three 1911 variants, all top brand, all over $1000 into them before they began to run smooth. And, they still jam at least once per shooting session on average. I like them, but I just can't trust any one I have ever shot. That is, trust it with my LIFE.

I love 1911's though. Maybe someday I will have one that is reliable. But, I fear that my the time I put that much money into it, it will be too expensive to carry. :(

That is a VERY nice custom 1911 in the picture though. I envy you and I suspect it will shoot and perform like a dream!

Just an update! I have shot +1000 rounds through the dream gun with not a single hiccup. It's seen a variety of brands, bullet styles and even some really dirty reloads that I keep around to practice clearing and this thing feeds them all. It sure is nice when they work the way they're supposed to. Thanks for all your nice comments (Grock groupies excluded).

Glockenpooper;
You got to be having some bad luck or poor
ammo, with a 1911 that jams once per session.
Both of mine cost less then $600 each and
fire each time I pull the trigger with reloads or factory ammo.
