Remember the dream gun? Here it is!

I know it's obnoxious but I just have to show off my Jim Garthwaite custom. It's a lightweight enhanced Commander slide on a lightweight Officer's frame. Details are Kart match barrel, King's speed safety, Brown high sweep grip safety, 40 lpi checkering on back of slide, 30 lpi on front & back strap & trigger guard, slide flattened, Heine sights with Trijicon front dot, carry de-horn, beveled mag well,Videcki triggers, trigger job with CMC tool steel hammer/sear, Spegel grips, Black-T over beadblast, etc. It's only got a few hundred rounds through it so far but not a hint of trouble except for me wishing I could shoot half as good as this gun deserves.

Dream gun?

And I was looking for one that holds 50 rounds, was concealable in the palm of my hand, shot better than I was capable of and never gave me problems.

So what do I get? A hybrid Colt. :D

Nice. Enjoy

You're not going to believe this but I just saw one exactly like it over at the 1911 forum. Is that a coincidence or what?
Seriously though, great looking weapon.

Nice one blunder,

The one that I described as part of your initial quest (stainless Caspian Commander) is in the final blending and finishing stage right now. Should have it done in a few weeks and I'll post the pics.

Yours turned out really nice - I'm proud for you...

Oh I'm gonna cause a war with this one... Why spend all that money for a gun that will work most of the time? You can get a Glock for about $600 (cheaper if you shop around) and it will shoot and shoot and shoot. They are damn accurate and fit the hand nicely. So my question is why would you spend a thousand dollars on a 1911 when Glocks are readily available? Cause Glocks are ugly right? The way a Glock shoots is anything but ugly to me. Why? Why? Why?

A G****? Perish the thought...they all look alike!
Nice roscoe blunder!

Only response can be that because class cannot be taught. An argument can be made that Elvis on black velvet is artwork but I'd still rather have a Monet. The Glock is a fine weapon and I have several but it's hard to get emotional about a hunk of extruded plastic. I might also argue that if you are truly interested in a gun that works, buy a revolver for $300-400. There is no doubt in my mind that my new 1911 is an expensive, less than perfect item but it also has something that a Glock doesn't, character and history. If you don't believe that, I believe that picture of the dog's playing cards is readily available.

If handguns debated:

"I am the expert's choice." - Glock candidate.

"I know experts. You are no expert's choice." - 1911 candidate.

---------

Seriously, though. Glocks are fine pistols. I own one. I may own more in the future. But... The 1911 is the classic by which all others are judged. The custom 1911 is the epitome of the classic design. Or if that is not good enough: How many experts in their respective fields of pistol shooting use 1911s, custom or otherwise? ALL others? Glocks?

I guess it comes down to how you view guns. I see my currently produced guns as tools. If judged by price, reliablity, and funtionality the Glock wins hands down. I have a deep appreciation for older guns. I enjoy my Colt "Prewoodsman" immensly. I, however, don't see why a person would want to spend twice as much to reproduce an outdated pistol when they can get a better current production tool for less. If I wanted a 1911 for its history I would buy an older one that HAS history. I knew I'd get a few hot replys . Ah well, do what you want. It's your money.

KilgorII, if the only way you evaluate guns is by their utilitarian aspects, then I truly feel sorry for you as you are missing out on what many feel is an important part of the whole story. I fondly remember a 1962 Sting-Ray (candy apple red convertible with 427hp 4 speed) that I once owned. Do they make cars today that are more efficient and practical. Sure! Would I rather have Camry? Don't think so! Guns are an emotional topic (just bring them up at a party) so practicality & rational thought has little to do with it. If you ever have the opportunity, shoot a true custom 1911 and then you'll probably understand the difference. 1911's aren't necessarily better but they are different and in a class by themselves.

"1911's aren't necessarily better but they are different and in a class by themselves."

Glocks are better, they are different, and are in a class by themselves. They are in the class of pistols that you can trust your life to.

I said earlier that I have a deep appreciation for OLDER firearms. I do not however see the reason for building a modern replica of an older firearm. I will use your car example. Owning a classic car is cool, I've got a 69' Mustang Fastback. I don't see the point in a kit car though. That is essentially what a modern day 1911 is. If I'm going to own a classic firearm, I want to own a REAL classic firearm. If I'm going to buy a current firearm, I want to buy the best current firearm. That my friends is a Glock.

20 years from now Glocks will be gone and
the 1911 will still be here. It is a work
of art. Nothing will take its place.

Jimminy Kricket! Can't the guy just show off his freakin' gun w/o starting a Glock v. M1911 war?
I own 2 of each, and I would trust my life to both of them. My Glocks inspire a lot of confidence, my M1911s inspire a lot of pride.
The M1911 design is as relevant today as it was 90 years ago. Enuff already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice gun, thanks for showing it- I wish more people showed off some of their nice guns on the forum.

I can't believe that this turned into a value contest on what you can get for 1/2 price thats better.

Hell, a Seiko tells the best time... but I would much rather have a $10k Patek Phillipe.

blunder's Colt will also make a great heirloom- to whoever that might be.

You guys are right. I didn't mean to pick a fight, I just wanted to understand the attraction to these and why a person would spend so much money on one. I got carried away arguing it rather than listening. Nice gun Blunder.
