Yes, there are. Large problems have existed with them since I first started looking at them in the early '70s. So far no one has solved the problems involved to the degree that would make them useful on a national scale.
I'm doing my little part (mostly because I'm cheap.) I walk to work most days and live in a 1350 sq.ft. house (not counting the unfinished basement and 3 porches.)
I can't imagine commuting after 20 years of being six blocks from the office. Meanwhile, my coworkers keep moving farther and farther out in the 'burbs and complaining about the price of gas and the congestion.
