In Illinois a deer hunting pistol had to have a cartridge case length of less than 1.4 inches so I built a 357 max and shortened the cases from 1.6 to 1.4 inches for hunting. Even with the shortened length I exceed 1800 fps with a 180gr psp bullet. Accuracy near moa at 100 yards. I've taken deer at 150 yards very cleanly. The law changed a few years ago allowing straight walled cases of any length but the 357 max and 44 mag still seem to be enough (most places I hunt I cant see a deer over 100 yards). If it were legal at time I probably would have used 35 remington as my starting cartridge.
