Reloading A Revolver In The Dark?

Victor,
If Ohio ever gets around to passing CCW I'll check into the Safariland. Thanks for the tip.

Gary,
The guy that taught me to shoot was an East Cleveland cop which pretty much explains where I picked up the 2 at a time method. Since the guy was right about everything else I just went along with everything he said.

With my wheel guns, I do much like RAE... 2 at a time, weak hand thumb as guide... when done "2 up" from cartridge-loops on my belt, I can fire 18 rounds ACCURATELY in well under 2 minutes...

Oh, the olden days - - -

When I entered the peace-officer bidness, the standard for fire six, reload, fire six was 25 seconds. Using a loop slide, two-at-a-time, I got my time to below 12 seconds, consistently, and was pretty smug. Then speed loaders became popular, and most cops could do as well.

With or without speed loaders, assuming right-handed shooter with both hands operational- - -
Right thumb operates cylinder latch as revolver and left hand come together.
Left middle and ring fingers press cylinder open from the right side, and go on through the frame, holding it open.
Barrel points straight up and left thumb ejects empties, as right hand goes for ammo.
Left hand brings butt into the body, pointing barrel downward at an angle.
Left thumb and fingers through the frame rotate cylinder as required, as right hand feeds cartridges into the chambers. Cupped left hand catches any fumbled rounds.
Left thumb closes cylinder as right hand assumes shooting grip.

Hint: If ammo is carried loose, keep NOTHING else in right front pocket. With practice, you can funnel them right into chambers.

As with any manual skill, this must be PRACTICED, preferably with duty ammo, or with duty-like dummy cartridges. After initial dexterity is achieved, practice with eyes level, without looking at hands.

Hemicuda - - What is your standard of ACCURATELY? I believe 18 hits in a silhouette torso at 15 yards can be done in 30--35 seconds. Okay, give me a week's practice--I'm rusty with a revolver.;)

A speed loader does reduce the time. Speed Strip may not gain any time, but keeps the ammo organized so you can carry something else in RF pocket. I can't think of ANYONE who carries loops at front of belt nowadays.

Best,
Johnny

The drills in my shooting class at the college (I was in the police program for a year and a half) required 18 rounds (made it so a reload was necessary with either a semi or a wheelgun) in 2 minutes... scored for accuracy AND speed...

I took my time with shots, and was rarely over 1 minute... (usually 55 or so seconds) with ALL shots in the X ring... (and I could do it at 50 yazrds, twice the distance required...)

for PURE speed, I could get it sub 40 seconds... but accuracy suffered a bit (hits in the 9 and 8 rings)

the "under 2 minutes" came from the fact that that was "max time" for the drills... and I actually saw people who either timed out while trying for accuracy, or couldn't keep them in the "kill zone" and fire 18 rounds in the alotted time...
