Reloading 270 win

Hello123 what kind of gun do you have and what have you done to the gun to make it more accurate? Sometimes a good load will not shoot in a gun that needs a good tune up. A tweak here and a tweak there will make a world of difference in the accuracy of a gun.

Hello123 - If you're getting .75" groups of 3 from your Model 700, you should stop right there. That's pretty darned good. You've found the same thing about Nosler Ballistic Tips that I have - they are very accurate. I use them almost exclusively in my .270 M700.

Mal H, I agree this is my finished load. I am content with the accuracy of this hunting rifle (though it will probably have more time spent shooting milk jugs at distance).

Impact- the gun is a stock synthetic BDL, nothing has been done but a trigger adjustment to around 3.5 lbs.

cdoc42-The ball powder would be the way I would probably try if I was going to w/u another load. Do any of you know why the could not make every powder ball instead of stick/cylindrical? Regarding just measuring the total length and getting accuracy, I guess it is beginners luck. My best friends 220 swift is getting 0.4 inch groups at 100 yards with just measuring total length.

The whole process of developing this load has been great. :)

Hello123 if you try to free float the barrel you may get better groups. I really don't like synthetic stocks. They flex to much! even more with a bipod. I have found that with the gun being free floated most all of the time the gun will shoot tighter groups. Also for little groups use sand bags or a good rest! I have never had good luck with tinny groups and a bipod. But I hear the swivel type bipods are the best!

I'm not a BR guy but I do like to play with my long guns and try to make them shoot the best they can! I have a good idea of what it takes. It's a fun thing to do :)

New bullets changed length.

Final load was H4831SC, Win brass, Nos. B tip bullets 130 g, Fed LR primers with a total length of 3.340 inches grouping 0.75 inch. That was until a new box of bullets (still with the Nosler B tips 130g) were purchased of a slightly different shape. Now my total length is 3.370 inches. We will have to see how these group.

123, I'm no salty dog at this but this is the stepwise loading process I have come to figure works best (for me). It seems to streamline the process and (for me)saves time and $. The most important thind (for me) is seating depth. Use a comparator as discussed above as the OAL of the bullet will vary from type to type and lot to lot. But the ogive is the same. You dont need all the fancy tools, but they help. Seat a "dummy round" (no primer/powder) further out than you expect necessary. Color the bullet either with a sharpie marker of by holding it over a candle to put a soot residue on it. Chamber the round and extract it, you will notice the color is rubbed off at the ogive of the bullet. Seat it a bit deeper and color it again, repeat till you are barely rubbing the color off.
Pick a powder, any acceptable powder. pick a mid line powder weight. Load 5 at this seat depth. Crank your bullet seater down about 1/4 turn and load another 5 and repeat and repeat and repeat...I usually make 5 or 6 sets of 5 all with the same powder weight, bullet, primer, and brass. Very important RECORD THE LENGTHS keep good records.
Shoot, and take your time (think cool barrel). Which ever depth gives the best group is the best depth. Dont be discouraged if the best group is 2" and the worst is 5", this is still the best seat depth.
Now work the powder, try different weights and types. Find the best groups then experiment with primers.
Keep us posted with your results. This method has given me groups as small as .1335 out of a stock CZ .222. Good luck.

Zeisloft, that is a fine reply, thanks. The frustrating thing was that was basically how I worked up my load, only I started with adjusting the powder first. Now I need to rework seating depth, with the bullet shape change that occured.

The Stoney Point bullet seating comparator and a chaep digital caliper is all you need with a 270 modded case. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and you are using the bullets you are going to shoot.
I use 60grs with CCI 200 primer RP or Norma cases an seat the Hornady 130gr spire point bullet .025" off the rifling. this gives .5" -.75" groups in my rifle depending on how good I am on the day.
The H spire points are very good and cheaper to practice with too. I have killed plenty of deer with these and all have been one shot kills.

my handloads

59.0 grains of H4831SC... Winchester WLR primers... Winchester brass, as well as leftover brass from some surplus ammo I had lying around (HMC, I think). My rifle (Remington 700 ADL) prefers 130 grain Hornadys or Sierras... results in roughly 3030 fps, give or take a few. Very good accuracy - 3/4" at 100 yards from bipod.

This is one of many, but is my favorite. For 150 grain bullets, I decrease to 57.0 grains.

Load finally complete...

60 grains of H4831SC, 130 grain N. Ball-Tip, Winchester brass, Federal LR primers, total length of 3.374 inches...groups around 1/2 MOA.

a few loads that work for me

130g sierra game king, 58.5g ADI 22213sc most days 1/2 MOA have taken 14 deer with this load.. all droped within 15 yards.

150g sierra game king 55.6g ADI 2213sc same results as 130g for groups but better kill rates at longer distances. have taken 64 deer with this.. longest at 485 yards..

All have been complete pass through.

Hope this helps a bit..

I don't mean to be unkind, but how are you measuring your groups? The attached picture looks like a bigger group than 1/2 inch.

oldscot3,

You do realize you are referring to a picture of a group that was posted 10 years ago, don't you?

But Zack333 is new, so I say: Welcome, Zack, to The Firing Line. Maybe start a new thread and tell us a little about yourself. I gather that you hunt and reload. This should be a good place for you. Regards, Pathfinder45.

I see they are now listing R17 in the 270 Win now. .

I have had very good results with that powder,

One I am going to try to get a pencil barrel to shoot this summer.

Im using IMR 4451 with those 130 grn Btips, its outstanding so far.
Also Im using N160 with 140 grn Partitions, super consistant, shoots a tad less than moa at 100 yds.
But I get nice results with Magpro and 150 grn bullets in my .270.
Took a 90 lb doe at 85 yds with the 150 grn ABLR and Magpro using CCI 250 primers...
