reliable shotgun? home defense

Remington 870 is a fine choice but it's not the "Glock of Shotguns". The Mossberg already has that honor.;)

...Time for bed, my humor's gotten stale.

I recently got a good deal on my first shotgun, a Benelli Nova 18.5" for $225. At the time I bought it I was also feeling up a Mossberg 500 and Remmington 870. Of the three I decided on the Benelli because of the location of the safety and action lock, being forward of the trigger guard, where the Mossberg's safety was up top and difficult to manipulate with a pistol grip, and the Remmington placed it behind the trigger guard it what seemed an unnatural position for me. Also the 870's are known to rust a bit, and it didn't have the factory ghost-rings.

Also the Benelli was (surprisingly) the cheapest of the three, even after buying a mag extension. Combined with having controls right where I expect them to be, I couldn't walk away without it.

Major downside of my choice is the lack of modifiability (that's a word, shut up) and cost of replacement parts, but for my first shotgun I don't need to complicate it too much while I'm learning the ropes.

With my remington I still have to turn it sideways to look, I can never remember which side is safe.
I'm used to this type of safety, the same is on my Benelli, and was on my earliest rifles growing up. Being right handed it's very intuitive, the trigger guard (where you finger should be, mind you) is smooth when you're off safe. This is one of the reasons I chose my Nova over an 870 (as in my above post), I couldn't brush the safety with my trigger finger to check/switch it with the Rem.

The Hawk 982 or Pardner Protector shotguns are a hell of a deal. They are more reliable than an 870 and more durably built. All 870 parts & accessories will fit them, except barrels.

The going price is around $200. The HAWK 982 is hard to find now because they have become very popular and the last time they were imported was last summer. More should be imported soon, in the next few weeks.

What is the "glock" of shotguns? I know almost nothing about shotguns.

If it's cheap and ugly, and usually works, you've found your gun.

That's the other reason I found the question to be humorous, it's a loaded question that means different things to different people.:D

FWIW, I have a Nova 20 guage beside my bed. We had a bad storm earlier this week and lost electricity for several hours that night. That Nova gave me a good feeling in case uninvited guests decide to take advantage of the darkness.

During my 30 years career in LE, I determined through experience in investigating home invasions, burglaries, etc., that ended in shootings, the 20 gauge has been as beneficial as any other gauge in ending the BG's intentions, usually with fatal consequences. Most of the fatalities were with homeowners using whatever was handy, usually small shot. Of course, #3 buckshot is also pretty handy for a 20 gauge's HD purposes. I have mine loaded with #6 promo loads as my home is only 30 feet wide and almost anything in a shotgun is fatal at that distance.

The Nova is probably not the Glock of the shotgun family but it goes bang and has never failed me in the field.

well your $300. tops budget doesn't allow for much these days.

a Mossberg persauder is around that dollar amount now...either opt your ceiling cap or think Mossberg. Mossberg has something Remington doesn't have, an easy to access as in very easy slide release button or clutch, the Remington requires for you either to change hands or to "fiddle" to access it, not easy to reach, rather hard (I find) to engage...not so much hard rather awkward. This for me, the Mossberg's easy to engage slide release button is why I have a Mossberg. Regarding the Mossberg's maricote finish version, odd as it may seem, so many fire arms come in flat black or some sort of parkerized finish or parkerized like finish, my Remington H.D. model is like that, I personally don't like a fire arm that looks like a neon light at night, and stainless and maricote's do. Food for home defense thought.
