Reliable, Concealable, 9mm Less Than 400 Dollars

I had a post here about the Sig 239, but after finding out that it will cost me over 550 dollars I decided to look for something a little less expensive. I think that I would also like to go with the 9mm because I could afford to shoot more often.

I would like to find something in the 350-400 dollar range.

I have been seeing alot of posts here about the CZ pistols and I have a couple of questions about them.

How much would a new one cost?

How big is the compact version of the CZ75? List some other pistols that are about the same size if you can.

Does it have an ambi safety/decocker?

Are there any other guns that are about the same price that would be as reliable as I've read these to be?

If you can handle the strange double-action trigger, the Kel-Tec P-11 is a great gun. Accurate, durable, and very reliable. (They weren't always this way, but in the past year or two, the remaining quality control problems seem to have been resolved.)

I carried one for several years. Never could get as good with it as I would like, but others didn't/don't have MY problem.

Another vote for CZ. Check out the CZ-85 Combat: all steel, adjustable sights, smooth trigger, great balance. Paid $425 new for mine.

I'm glad you asked about the CZ 75B Compact. It's probably my all-around favorite pistol (especially in Duo-Tone, which just looks great).

Sizewise, it's probably around Glock 19 size, maybe a little smaller. Perhaps a Commander-style 1911 is a good comparison. I have small hands and it fits me perfectly--better even than my 1911.

You can get it with the same controls as the full-size CZ 75B--manual safety that lets you go Condition 1, which is great--or you can get it with a decocker. I have the manual-safety version.

You should be able to get one for about $400. That's about $50 more than the full-size 75B and worth every penny.

It comes with 10-round mags but there are 13-round preban mags out there too. I think it takes the original 75B to a whole new level.

Shmackey,

Thant's a nice looking gun! :D Can you get it with ambidexrous controls? (I'm a southpaw)

I've also noticed the Taurus PT-911. Does anyone own this pistol? How does it compare in size, function, reliability, and cost to the CZ?

A big thanks all who have responded so far. :)

Have you looked at the various models that Ruger has in its P-series line? They are available in 9 mm, 40, and 45 ACP and will definitely fit your price range used, if not in new.

Two military surplus Bulgarian Makarovs -- one for home, one to take with you. Cheap, reliable, and 9mm Makarov ammo widely available.

Price is $100 to $160 each.

Compact 9mm's for <$400:

Used 3913/908.
Star M-43 Firestar.
Taurus PT-908/911.
Kel-Tec P-11.

The PT-908/911 that you asked about combines the Taurus-modified Beretta-style lockwork with a modified Browning tilting barrel short recoil setup. Very nice little guns for the money. Stay away from the polymer Milleniums.

I don't think the regular CZ 75B Compact is available with ambi controls, but maybe the decocker version is. Or perhaps CZ can install them for you.

The CZ 85 Combat comes with ambi controls standard, but it's not a compact. Good gun though.

Shmackey, I like that gun! I've never gotten to handle a CZ-75B Compact, but it looks like it would be perfect for me. I'll have to go talk to my trusty local FFL and see if he has one.

And my $0.02 on the thread topic, I picked up my 9mm HS2000 (gen3) at a local shop for $360. I've seen them on Gunbroker for around $300. It's lightweight, simple to maintain, able to take hicap mags and travels with me as my primary CCW gun.

I first suggested the Kel-Tec P-11, because of your budget constraints. And with thought to its small size and very light weight.

My personal carry gun, and I have a number to choose from (including a CZ-85 Combat and older Browning HP) is the Star Firestar Plus.

Its about as small as the Kel-Tec P11, just a bit heavier, but with a very nice SA trigger. (SA only). You can find 13 round mags.

I shot mine in a small IDPA match last year and had the best times of the match; never could do that with my Kel-Tec P11.

I've got two... one I picked up in a trade, and one I bought in a Pawn Shop for $129 (ANIB). Nice guns.

Bacchus,

The Ruger pistols are nice guns, but a bit too big for concealed carry, at least for me.

Walt,

I almost bought a Firestar Plus once. It really felt good in my hand, but I didn't like the idea of SA, so I went with the Ultrastar. I kept it for a while and never had any problems with it, but it was a bit bulky for concealment.

I really like the looks of the Taurus PT-911, but I also like the CZ. I guess I'm leaning more towards the PT-911 because of the ambi controls. Of the two, which is the smallest/slimmest?

Hey SHMackey,

How's that holster in the pic working out for ya ? Any problems tucking & untucking ?

very interesting, hummm

Look for a used Glock or a new Ruger cost about $400.How about a Ruger GP100 you can shoot 38s pretty cheap, its a much more versital gun than a auto loader.
