Reliability, Am I just lucky?

I haven't had a "dud" in a long long time. With the exception of a couple of seriously deformed cartridges jamming things up, I haven't had any problems with any of the following guns, almost all of them bought used:

Dan Wesson 715 6" SS near mint in the box, 3 grips, the wrench, a bunch of front sight inserts....my best deal ever $269!!! That was in '05 though, a similar gun went for almost 3X that recently.
Dan Wesson 15, 4" blued.
Dan Wesson .44 magnum 6" blued. One of the first ones made.
Astra A-75 .40S&W.. I only sold it because it was painful to shoot, and I needed money to pay bills.
Astra A-75 9mm, a great all steel little gun.
Astra A-100 9mm, totally reliable, and I got it super cheap because the seller thought it was "rusted". All the rust was was some sort of weird polishing compound (Jewelers rouge or something like it) that had splattered on it. It was actually in near new condition.
EAA Witness .45 fullsized New, great gun. I had about 2000 rounds through it when I sold it. I want another one, or a CZ97B.
Tanfoglio/"Mossad" 9mm Compact. Same as an older EAA Witness.
S&W 5906 LE trade in from Puerto Rico police. Nice.
S&W 4586 One of the Bud's trade ins. A little dinged up, but shoots great.
Beretta 92FS $400, came with an amazing amount of mags and a decent holster, and even some spare parts, including a new locking block. An older one, barely fired in 98% condition.
Beretta 84BB. Seller claimed "85% condition". I would say 90 % minimum, for less than $300 shipped. The 84/Browning BDA are the kings of the .380's, IMHO.

I figure I'm overdue for a "dud", but I've had a nearly 5 year run, so I guess I should be happy.

I have ben very happy with the Beretta 92FS that I bought. Mine is all stock as well. I like it as well as my sigpro 2340

Good Results

I don't shoot as much as the OP. I do have a Manurhin Walther PP in .32 that has went through a couple of thousand rounds over the last few years without any malfunctions. I recently, purchased an Interarms Walther .32 PPK/S in SS that has went through around 350 rounds during the last month with equally good results.

Will they ever malfunction ~ Yep!!!

Get a quality firearm, maintain it properly, and use good ammunition and you shouldn't have many issues. You CAN expect a bad round at some point, maybe even a breakage of small parts (extractors...). But, you get that with any firearm. As good as they get, they are a tool made by human hands. Had a truck one time that was a real lemon. Didn't mean I stopped driving or that all trucks made by that mfg are all lemons. Same applies...

I agree with Leejack too. Heck, I've purchased 3 different Taurus handguns. It seems their QC is near the bottom for catching problems before they leave the factory. Yet, I have experienced zero problems with those guns. If I were to believe the different posters on all of the gun forums then I should have had problems with all of those guns, expecting to send some back multiple times. It didn't happen, not even once!

I have a 20 year old S&W 4506 that has never failed in any way-regardless the ammo. From 200 gr LSWC's to the infamous Flying Ashtray that reeked havoc in so many 1911's fed like the pistol was made for it. Only one 1911 would feed like that and that was"luck" as it was the only one that did. I should be "horse whooped" for ever trading it.

With ammo, I haven't been as lucky. Years ago when 80% of what I shot was reloads-never did any fail to fire. Within the past few months I've had dud CorBon ammo and Federal HST ammo and that should never happen with premium ammo. The CorBon was a 135 gr 40 S&W caliber that didn't go bang(see attached). the Federal was a 165gr JHP that felt and sounded like it only had half the powder in it. I had to ditch that box as I didn't know if perhaps somewhere in the box was one that had more than it's share since the other one had little powder in it. May have been in another lot but, I wasn't going to chance it.

well....

i don't know. I've got roughly 15 handguns - everything from Taurus/Rossi to milsurp to Sig and HK and I can't recall the last time I've had a malf in any of them.

Now, my little Savage Mark II .22 rifle? That's another story. Can't seem to get through a single magazine without several problems...
