Reducing H-110

I have a friend that loads 26 g of 296 in .44 Mag and has never had any issues.

I have loaded 20 to 30 gr of H110/W296 in .44 mag. but not all with the same bullet weight. Not knowing the weight/construction of the bullet your friend uses, makes the 26gr powder charge irrelevant. That and it has nuttin' to do with loading for a 300 Blackout.

I had issues with 296 cycling in my 300 blk with heavy bullets so I switched to Lil Gun and it works great with everything I've tried so far. Plenty of data out there for Lil Gun using jacketed bullets. I haven't seen anything for cast bullets, probably because the 300 blk was developed as a special ops cartridge and rapid firing would likely cause heavy lead fouling.

H-110

I got tangled up with H-110 when I bought a Blackhawk 44 mag and started reloading for it. Full power loads is what I wanted. Picked H-110. Eventually went to a S&W 29 around 1986. Started backing off on the 240gr. bullet loads cause my poor old shaky hands weren't holding too good.
Then, miracles of all miracles, I bought a .22 Hornet. H-110 again. Finally I could just barley get into what was left of the original 8 pounds of H-110.
I don't load a reduced load in any revolver I load for except for the .45 colt. I just go for a less powerful revolver.

Being an amateur chemist ...is a plan for a disaster.....

just follow the published recipes for the caliber, bullet type and weight ....and stay within the published and tested min and max ...or heed the instructions Hodgdon prints right on the powder bottles for H-110 that says do not reduce more than 3%....

( you said you often read the warning about 3%....hopefully, you read it right off the powder bottle !! )...

Just started loading 300blk my self. I'm using h110, and while I hadn't heard the 3% thing until now. I will concur with higher powder loads being more accurate.

Nosler shows 17-19 gr h110 for the 110gr varmageddon. I started at 18gr and moved past 19gr listed max .... Ended at 19.4gr ,looked like I still had plenty more room to go. As I got to 19.0, 19.2, and 19.4 the SD/ES tightened up significantly. Was pushing 2050-2150 fps avg our of a 8.5" barrel AR

I'll keep the 3% in mind for the future.
