Red Dot Scopes

The Aimpoint PRO is the best red dot value out there for the money, IMHO.

It's bombproof, the included mount is excellent (if a little heavy), and the battery life is insanely long. Turn it on and leave it on for years and years. Always ready to go - no need to fumble with switches.

I recently got a new Bushnell Micro for $85 +/- through Amazon, and it works great. The dot is very bright and sharp.

It's supposed to have a 3000 hour battery life with a CR2032. I read a test on YouTube and it compared favorably with the more expensive Trijicon (sp?).

It's harder to pick up the dot than with my 40 mm full-sized red-dot, but the difference in size is amazing. My Ruger MKII carries much better now.

if money was no option I would have all aimpoints on mine but I'm a cheap bastard
Im a cheap bastard too, thats why I have Aimpoints on anything that needs one.

Id have a couple more, but I wasted money on "cheap" stuff that didnt hold up. :)

Ive had Aimpoint M2's and ML2's on a couple of guns for a number of years now. They have held up to hard use on everything from .22's to .30 caliber guns, including full autos. These days, I dont turn them off, and just change the batteries once a year. The newer models have a much longer battery life.

As far as distance, I shoot at 200 yards on a regular basis with no troubles. My sights are all 4moa, and its no trouble at all.

This is one on my SAR1....

I have the Bushnell TRS red dot (~$85) on one rifle and it's okay.
Just set up a Burris Fastfire II ($210) and I like the open design better.
I used a mid-height UTG riser with both red-dots and obtained near absolute co-witness with fixed sights.

Save up $150 more and get the Aimpoint Pro without a doubt. I just put one on my M&P15T and I'm very impressed with it. The money you save in battery expense over the lifetime of the optic will more than make up the difference.

what is meant by co witness with the iron sights ?
If you mount a red dot on a mid height riser doesn't that mount it at the same height as if it were mounted on a carry handle ?

If I mounted the red dot directly onto the AR top rail without an additional mount/ riser the fixed front sight would completely obscure the red dot; in other words, without a riser the red dot is too low.

For your price range I would go with the Vortex SPARC. I have never seen a report of one failing. Even if it does Vortex CS is stellar.

Cowitnessing is a setup where the optic is mounted at such a height so that not only can you look through the irons and optic at the same time, but you can also see that the red dot is indicating the same aiming point as the iron sights. The upshot is that you can verify zero of either optic or irons just by looking through the optic... the red dot will be on the top of your front sight post when properly centered in the rear aperture sight.

There is absolute cowitness, where the irons are right in the middle of the tube, and there's lower 1/3 cowitness, where the optic sits up a bit higher and the irons and dot cowitness in the lower third of the field of view. Lower 1/3 gives a slightly better field of view when you aren't using your irons, but absolute lets you use the same head position on the rifle whether you use irons or optic.

This is only workable with 1x (non-magnified) optics. I'm not even sure that all 1x optics are capable of being cowitnessed; if you try to do it with one that won't, you'll be getting different points of impact from each if you try a low quality optic for this.

You probably wouldn't be able to use the sight even if you didn't have the fixed sight in the way. The straight stock on an AR requires any sight to be raised above the bore.

The carry handle and tall front sight on the AR weren't added for aesthetic reasons.:D

That is the only way you can rest your cheek on the stock and still see the sights, unless you have some type of a facial deformity. Other guns (AK, M14, M1, etc) have drop in their stocks to that you eye lines up with the sights.

I have two Primary Arms red dots that I really like for the money. My AR is just a range gun so it doesn't get rough usage and the PA sights work just fine. I have the M3 and the M4 style. They are well built and PA service is top notch should you ever need it.

Here's the M3 on my S&W M&P 15 Sport AR.

The Burris XTS-135 is a very good red-dot. And Burris is an exceptional company if you ever need to deal with them. These scopes are in the $250 range without a mount, but MidwayUSA recently had them for 50% off. It's rugged, had clear glass with a slight blue tint. Waterproof, shockproof and according to Burris submersible. Made in South Korea. I have one on my Colt. It has gone about 500 rounds with no problems. It holds zero very well. 11 brightness settings.

I have one on my Colt.

Is that a Colt upper?

I have never seen a Colt upper with a bottom sling swivel and no side sling swivel.

Of course, I have never seen a Colt lower with fire/safe on the opposite side either.

When did they start doing that?

By the way, we have the same walls and carpet.:D

Yes, it's all Colt. Bought as a complete rifle. It's an LE6920MR-R. Someone else asked me about the sling swivel placement. I have no idea when or why Colt moved it to the underside. I also don't know when they started putting safe/fire on the right side.

Learn something new every day. I prefer the side sling swivels but I am glad they started adding the safe/fire on the off side, they have been doing that on the military M4s for a while.

Pre-ban Colt Sporter, bottom only sling swivel mount, safety on left only. This is old school, before all the rails and "tacticool" gear became massively popular...

What, does everybody have this carpet???
