Red Dot Scopes

Looking for a scope of some kind for my AR-15, right now im leaning towards a red dot of some kind.

Anyone have suggestions? What do you guys put on your AR's? Any pictures?

Im not completely sold on a red dot, so lets hear it all!

My price range would most likely fall 250 and under....

I put a Vortex SPARC on my PS90 - quite happy with the optic and really like the 2 m.o.a. dot and supplied doubler.

+1 on Vortex. My son has a Strikefire on his AR, and we like it.

The big advantage the SPARC has over the Strikefire is that the Strikefire has a 4 MOA dot, while the SPARC is 2 MOA. So, for long range, say 200 yards, the Strikefire dot covers 8" of the target while the SPARC covers only 4.

I have an Aimpoint Comp2 and my friend has a Strike Fire. The Aimpoint is definitely a little nicer than the Strike Fire but unless you're shooting it every day the $250 difference is probably better spent elsewhere.

The difference between the Aimpoint Micro T1 and the SPARC is nearly negligible, I would go with the SPARC.

SPARC...for the money, it's hard to beat

Under 200 yards... I shoot my EOtech XPS out to 200 yards, however it has a 1 MOA dot. My 2 MOA Aim Point is little harder to use at 200.

what range is the red dot useful for ?

What are you shooting at and how well can you shoot?;)

Think of a red dot as easier to acquire Iron sights that are visible at night.

I can hit a 5 gal bucket at 530 yards (the longest I have tried) with mine on a Colt 6920.

Not necessarily 1st round hits, but I can usually get it in the 3 or 4th round once I figure out the hold over.

Anyone have suggestions? What do you guys put on your AR's? Any pictures?

What are you going to be using it for? Playing around at the range? Duty use? Showing off to friends?

Different uses will require different sights.

For $250 you have very limited options, none of which I would recommend for duty use.

MAy I suggest the LUCID? Search for it on TFL. It has been discussed many times. I own one for my AR and it is excellent.

I have a couple Aimpoints- the Micro T-1 and the CompM4. I like them just fine- incredible battery life, extremely rugged, and top notch in every respect. However, those are way outside your price range.

I've read good things about the Primary Arms, Vortex, and Burris optics- those are in the $200-300ish price range. I also have a cheaper Millett on a .22LR AR, and it seems to be ok- not anywhere close to the Aimpoints in quality, but usable.

If you can stretch much at all, the Aimpoint PRO is in the low $400s with mount... IMO, it's worth getting together another $150.

I went through the process of looking for a scope for my AR. I went with a Strikefire for a red dot (CQB) and a Burris 3-9x (>100 yards). They both work but require taking one off and putting the other on. So after learning a bit and spending more money than I should have. I purchased the Nikon M-223 1-4X. You can use the 1X for close and fast target acquisition and with the 4x I can easily and consistently hit a 10" steel gong.

My recommendation, get a 1-4X scope. If you need illumination or a red dot, they have those models now too (Burris, Leupold...)

if money was no option I would have all aimpoints on mine but I'm a cheap bastard so I use truglo red dots which I've only used out to 50 yards but can hold perfect zeros despite my rough and unkind treatment. they only cost around $40 at midway. another one I picked up at midway is a leapers red/green dot and it's very nice. the green is nicer in low light environments and while shooting paper while the red stands out more in the woods. the leapers cost me about $80 and just yesterday I was shooting soda cans at 100 yards with my AK using the leapers so it is definitely fun plinker and hunting accurate.

Buy the Vortex SPARC. At $200 they are much closer to the $400-$600 units in quality. Anything less expensive will disappoint.

I just picked up a Vortec SPARC and even though I hate how it looks with the large mount, it works very well. For $200 you can't go wrong with this optic.

Not a rifle, I had an Aimpoint on my Ruger Redhawk.
I really liked it.
That dancing red dot will teach you real quick how steady, or unsteadily, you are holding your gun. That feature alone will discipline the shooter to hold better.
