red dot on revolver

Is it blasphemy to put a red dot on a 686+? I like to hit small and I just can't do it with irons past 15 yds or so.

When Smith first came out with the 586, i put a pro-point on one and used it for falling plate matches.

Super cool set up. Unfortunately, college expenses forced me to sell that setup. Its a cool rig....go for it

a number of years ago, I mounted a pro point on my long barreled super redhawk in 44mag....was an uber cool set up. sold the hawk.

swapped the propoint to a ruger MkII govt. with long slab side barrel traded that setup for a colt series 70 in 45acp that I again used for trade fodder...lol

go for it...your 686 will love it

I've got one on a 686+. All my handguns have dots on them except my carry guns. Competition shooting showed me their value for many years. If you like hitting what you're aiming at in any light condition (except complete darkness) a red dot is the way to go.

I have one on my 686 with a 8 3/8" barrel. It is the only way I can now hit exactly what I am aiming at at 75 yards. It does look a bit ungainly.

Sounds like it will be a go for me. I put a Leupold 2-8x scope on my XVR and I think I should have gone with a red dot instead. At the bench its really nice to have that 8x power and its extremely accurate at 100yds. However in practical use such as the tree stand its difficult to line up and find my target. Ideally a 3-4x red dot would be the way to go. So far I havent found any without adding a unit.
The cheap (barska) I have on my 22/45 lets me hit black consistently at 100yds. I was impressed.

Not at all !!

Is it blasphemy to put a red dot on a 686+?
Not at all and I have mounted RedDots on many different firearms. There are some that I would consider to be blasphemy but DA Revolvers are not one of them. .... ;)

Be Safe !!!

This will give you some idea what it might look like, depending of course on the type and brand of red dot. This is my 629 Classic with a Millett 30 mm red dot sight. This one has a 5 minute dot, so this just over 2" group at 75 yds. is a pretty good one, but not uncommon for this VERY accurate revolver.

My S&W 629 PC Magnum Hunter came equipped with a red dot scope from the factory..Even tho its a cheap $35 Leapers UTG it has given reasonably good sercive. l did have to replace it after 1800 rds because the lense cracked internally. l simply got another at that cheap price but l yearn for an Aimpoint Pro.l have a Burris Fast Fire lll on my SW 657 and it has stood up well.. l just don't care for its small size

What's the minimum barrel length you could reasonably use to put a red dot scope on? How about a 4" GP100? 3" ? LCR357? :D

I have used a Simmons 4 recticle red dot scope on a 4" S&W 686, 5" S&W 627, 4" S&W 329, 6-1/2" S&W 629, Marlin 1894C, Marlin 1894SS without problems. The Simmons has held up well with recoil. If it is asthetics you are asking about, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For my use it is simply a matter of vision. The 4" revolver got me better results with the red dot than manual sights. The looks did not bother me. If it is for hunting and using a 4" revolver does not bother you, why would a red dot scope on it matter?

I can never understand how a shooter or a hunter worries about asthetics. Do my shoes match my sling? What color gun case should I get? What's your favorite color range bag? Etc. I think if these things bother you, you would be better off taking up another "sport". Shooting should be about function and results. How you look while shooting seems kind of odd to me. Maybe it's just my age

I was asking about function. Kinda thought 4" might be the minimum you'd want to consider putting a scope on. But if I thought I could still pocket carry it, I'd put one on my LCR, y'know, "just because". :p

I have a 1rst gen SAA in .38-40 that had been in the bottom of my grandfather's sock drawer for many years. Since there was a little wear in the bluing on one side of the cylinder from sliding back and forth in the drawer, I decided to grind the top strap flat and mount a Picatinny rail on it with an Aimpoint Pro. I can shoot it much more accurately but it has the drawback of the Aimpoint getting in the way when fanning it.

Just kidding.

Seriously, I don't see a problem with putting a red dot on your revolver.

Slim. I put it on my GP 4" 100 and accuracy went up immediately. So to answer your question. Sure, Why not? Especially in lower lighting or indoor range.
