Recommend me a rimfire scope

I just bought a 17 HMR and will pick it up from CA gun jail in a little bit:

I am going to use this for target practice at 50 meters, and occasionally 100 meters.

On my previous rimfire (Marlin 795) I mounted a Nikon Rimfire 4x32 and did fairly well (see my other thread: http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4840602#post4840602).

That being said, I am quite content with the clarity of that particular glass, but I understand that many, if not most of you will recommend I use a higher powered scope.

That being said, what would be a decent scope that offers similar/better clarity than my Nikon? My budget would likely be under $400, unless I win the lottery or something :D.

Please let me know, thanks!

4X is pretty good for 50-100Meters. Nikon makes very good scopes in my opinion. I just purchased a 2-7X32 Nikon ProStaff for my AR15 for $139 from Optics Planet and I am very happy with it. I had a 1-3X20 Weaver on it before and 3X was just not quite enough for 100 yd targets (would have been fine for a man sized target). All I could see of the 100yd rifle target was a big black circle so I just had to aim for the center of it. With the 7X I can actually read the numbers on the target.

How do your Muellers compare to higher end/more expensive scopes such as Leuopold and Nikons?

Specifically, is there a comparison in the clarity between the scopes?

Also, slappy, would it be possible to take a picture of your scope picture at 100 yards?

I put a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50mm on my .17hmr Sako & couldn't be happier. Set on 14x you can see the .17 holes on a 100 yard target. Set on 4.5x has worked for me in hunting situations. While the Zeiss is over your budget, I see Optics Planet has Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40mm with adjustable objective for $320.

I've been looking for one as well for my 10-22, will be following with interest.

On a side note, I swore off ever buying from Optics Planet ever again. The last three orders I placed from that site that showed my product in stock were placed on back order after I paid for them. I will never do business with them again. There are plenty of companies who actually stock the items I want.

I use regular cf rifle scopes on my .22s. Current one is a fixed 4X on Ruger 10/22. Got it for $3.00 at a garage sale. Ded critters don't know it didn't cost $400.00.

Under $400 for a .17HMR?
Weaver V16 (4-16x42mm)

It's about $280-300, offers enough power to see tiny targets at 100yds, and has great repeatable adjustments for dialing in distance.

For a similar quality, but very compact scope in 3-9x, at a lower $240 price point, try the Clearidge RM, It's a Japanese built scope similar to the Weaver RV9 model, but with the same target turrets that the V16 uses.

Both of these have AOs adjustable from 10-infinity, so you can use full magnification at any range you choose without being out of focus, and you can eliminate any possible parallax that might slightly open up groups.

if ur just using it for target shooting you may want 2 look at a rear peep and front blade setup. they make some high precision setups like that and 2 me are more accurate than a scope at the ranges you described

A 17 HMR is primarily for day-light plinking. The rifle doesn't have all that much recoil, and day-time plinking doesn't need the kind of glass that you'd need for (say) trophy elk hunting.

I would not spend that much money in "glass quality" - since you don't really need light collection capabilities (that's what you pay for with a $1000 scope).

Unless you're doing something tactical, I think I'd be fine with a scope that's priced around $100.

I shoot my .22 with a reasonably functional Simmons 22 mag scope.
(80 reviews at Cabelas give the scope 4.5 out of 5 stars).

Granted - I'd never be caught dead in the field with this scope on my Model 70 .30-06 (I have a Burris Fullfield on that one).

Another fan of Mueller scopes here. I own three and think they have very good glass at their price points. I think an APV or APT 4.5-14x40 would work great on your .17 with lots of cash left for more ammo.

I just picked up a Bushnell 3x9x40 Elite Limited edition scope that, for under $200 really does a nice job. It even has side focus, which I have come to appreciate very much.

For those of you that own/tried multiple scopes, would you mind ranking them in terms of glass clarity and repeatability?

i.e. Zeiss, Leupold, Bushnell, etc. etc. <== I know that may not be 100% and different models may make a difference. That's why I am asking you fellas :D

I put a older Leopold Varmint II I had on my wife's 39A the clarity is excellent works great for what she'll be needing it for at the time I bought it it was 250.00 scope but worth every penny.

The Bushnell elite series are pretty good scopes. I had one when they were marketed as Bausch and Lomb Elite series. Mine was an elite 3000 in 3x9x40 if I remember correctly. Personally, I think that is way too much scope for a .17HMR, or any rifle that isn't really much good past 150 yards or so but it's your money. That is the scope I would like to have for a 600+ yard rifle, or at least that powerful a scope
