Recommend a good value hunting knife

Thanks again, Creature, for the suggestions of going with Kellam. I'm already thinking of buying some more as gifts this Christmas for my brother and father.

I knew you wouldn't be disappointed.

And you're right, they would make great gifts...that's a great idea!

Gerber Longbow... Best knife I think

Even if you already have a knife, I would definitely recommend this one.

I purchased this Gerber "Longbow" knife last year from Cabelas and it worked great. It kept its edge after skinning out 3 deer like it had never been used. You can get the skinner model, or the guthook model. It is made with 154cm corrosion-resistant steel. You can buy it from Cabelas for $69.99, but you can get it on eBay for around $40. Comes with a nice leather sheath.

Couldn't resist. Ordered one of the knives you recommended.
The sheath is disappointing but it's a neat, no, make that an outstanding product. I carry my knives in the backpack anyway so no big deal on the sheath.

I would rank it side-by-side with the other knives I have from that part of the world regardless of price.

THX for the recommendation.

The sheath is "different", but I came around not long after I first got mine. I actually found it to be quite serviceable...expecially after I waded through a stream that was a bit deeper than I originally though. I had the knife attached to my belt when I went almost chest deep into the water.

Had the sheath been made of leather, or even ballistic nylon, I am convinced that the carbon steel blade would have been in pretty deep trouble. I didnt have time to properly dry out the leather, nor was I going to carry the knife out of the sheath since I was in very rough country. The hard sheath is quick to dry and is also very safe.

I in no way consider myself a survivalist or an expert, but its easily the single best knife that I have ever packed with on a hike or camping...and I have some very good knives that cost ten times or more what that little knife costs, custom or otherwise. I cant say enough good thing about this ultra-affordable little jewel of a knife. I hope it works out for you as well as mine has for me.

Now if you want a great yet inexpensive folding knife, I recommend the Opinel folder...

Self, what style did you get? My wife and I love ours and I look forward to using it in the future for many years. Plus, it just looks so cool sitting next to my Tikka rifles in the safe!

John,

I got the little guy with the carbon steel blade & the red handle. I like the red handle!!!!!!

Creature,

I wasn't too sure about the plastic sheaths Moras come with till I had one for a while but, that sheath is much thicker and has an internal feature that aids keeping the edge off the plastic. They have drain holes as well. Sportsman's Guide sells 2 Moras for the price of 1 Kellam.

The only thing that worries me about the Kellam is the part your belt goes through. It's pretty thin plastic. I don't do it now but there were times when I plowed through the thick stuff working my dogs I'm pretty sure would have popped that off the belt.

All that is history now. If I didn't carry my knives in a backpack already that feature would make me start.

I have a hunting trip in two weeks. Real world testing is not far in the future.

Best guys,

Griptilian folder made by Benchmade. Around $80 at Cabelas. D2 steel folder that flips open easily with one hand. I loved mine until my son decided he had to have it.
