That box smoker was a cold smoker.
Good point. Since the hotplate/skillet combo was directly under the fish, I was thinking it was hotter. The recipe called for smoking at 150-160 degrees. I smoke briskets at 200.
Still, with paper burning at Fahrenheit 451, you could probably up it a notch without setting the cardboard on fire. Definitely would need to be tested before setting/forgetting.
