Recent ammunition surge.

I went to academy yesterday because they were having a sale on some 3" 00 buck, and I wanted to pick up another few while so.

The ammo wall was 60% picked clean, with cases out on the floor, most empty.

Was not that way less than a week before, surely it is not being driven solely by the CT incident.

I asked the local gun shop where I occasionally go if they could get their hands on a lake city can of 5.56 M855, he said not only did he not have it, he could not get it right now because everyone was sold out as of last couple weeks. I spoke to a shop today that said they have moved 250k rounds in the last two weeks!

State of the world, politics fear of new law, or paranoia?

Anyone else seeing this in their area?

BTW, if anyone knows where I can get the M855 East Texas, please do let me know.

The Newtown shootings and all the talk of new anti gun legislation is exactly whats driving a new 'run' on ammo, guns, and magazines.

I would have figured most around here to not be so concerned, after all this is Texas, where the average citizen is no stranger to guns.

I picked up 20 more magpull 30rnd mags just because they seemed to be getting scarce too and figured they may have resale value (guy in classified, all the stores again are picked clean)

What is the general feel that some of this is really going to fly this go around, or just media time in a turbulent political arena?

I have heard gun law scares before, but never seen looting style wipe outs of major retailers, kind of unnerving. Is it mass spook, or are there really some teeth behind all this?

I saw that dicks halted sales at 500 stores, and that Walmart stopped some adds.

I realize it is all opinion at this point, but I would like to hear what the more aware of the 2nd amendment people have to say.

I think it is hard to say at this point. No matter what the anti's want it still must pass both houses of congress. I feel that the majority is still leaning pro gun but that could be wishful thinking. The media still has a lot of influence.
As for myself, I got what I need long ago. Ammo is my only real concern for the near future.

Well, the 2012 date looms close too, a lot of hoarding because of that, now with almost certain legislation attempts coming in the future, well, there you go.

I buy as I shoot I only keep some premium ammo for concealed carry and hunting.

In 08 I couldn't get ammo for months and it sucked. I feel that may be the case this time. However, many manufacturers may have learned from '08 and hopefully will catch up to demand sooner.

I had planned to make an ammo purchase for some Christmas weekend plinking and stuff, but it may not happen now if I don't get some.

I was over at Sportsman's Warehouse this morning looking for another AR.

The racks were full last Thursday and virtually empty today.

I asked how the ammo was moving and they were out of .223 and 9mm.

A few boxes of CCI 22 lr and some 40 and a small amount of .45.

I have not seen a run on components yet but that is coming.

I have for the most part all I will ever need, and If I ever were to run low, I do not believe I would wish to survive what horrible state preceded said situation.

The buckshot was just a matter of awesome price. So if I get good deals, I generally take them if for no other reason than to go toss some lead at a range.

I have heard talks before, and seen some of the extreme hoarders, but this was a general population mad dash. Still sits uneasy with me for the most part.

O' well, when the steam dies down, a few well placed adds should net me all the target ammo I could ever want for pennies on the dollar.

Although I would still like to get a can of the M855, and maybe shoot up some of the other stuff I have.

So if anyone has a lead, I would like to see what they have and what it costs.

I am glad I reload most all my ammunition to include rifle, handgun and shotgun. Most of us reloaders have attemped over the last couple of years to convince more out there to take up reloading.

I think we all see a three prong attack in gun control in the areas of gun types, magazine capacity and ammunition. Ammo could end up with a legally reduced production rate, higher prices and additional taxes. Who knows, we may be faced with a maximum allotment we can buy.

After the last shortage happened in 08 and I couldnt even find primers for reloading I decided I wouldnt be caught short again. I have plenty of powder, brass, primers, bullets, and best of all thousands of rounds of reloaded ammo and factory ammo for all my guns. I bought 4 more magpul magazines monday to go with the several I already have. Ive got enough to get me through this insane mess thats going on. You guys that are looking I hope you find what you are looking for.

I was back over at Sportsman's Warehouse again this morning. They were due a shipment of rifles and ammo last night.

There was one oddball .308 AR style in the rack. Everything else is gone.

No .45, 9mm, .40 and very little .380, 38spl and .357 ammo.

All powder and primers are gone.

All or very near all Glock magazines gone. Some are there for XDM .40 but none for 9mm or .45.

People two and three deep buying any gun they can get their hands on.

Everyone polite at this point but one wonders how long that will last.

I am amazed how fast the shelves have emptied.

I know, gun shop yesterday had a four hour wait on a ten minute background check, assuming it was load on the other end of the line because there were only about ten people in there.

Come on Saturday, and come on people wanting their money back willing to make great deals on brand new firearms! :D

Made the rounds to two LGS's. No AR style at all in either one. No bolt guns in the small shop I frequent.

Sportsman's Warehouse does have a selection of bolt guns. About 30% of all the handguns are gone. They got in some .45 ammo last night along with some 22 and 9mm.

I picked up some .45. All the 22 is gone. No .308. All the hicap mags for AR gone as well as most for handguns.

Counter was 2 deep this morning. It is getting crazy.

After the last shortage happened in 08 and I couldn't even find primers for reloading I decided I wouldn't be caught short again.
You and me both. About the only thing I could use is a few more projectiles in .22 and .30. Once supplies eased up I started buying in case lots whenever whatever I was looking for hit a good "on sale" price.

Will continue to do the same whenever this latest crunch relaxes.

Looks like 2008 all over again. I am surprised. There has been no legislation proposed that I am aware of.
I made it a point to email my representatives expressing my views on protecting our Second Amendment.

I was wondering the same things. I haven't heard of any legislation actually being officially put on the table yet, let alone being voted for. Yet in the last week, the local Sportsman's has completely run out of many kinds of ammo and even had signs out last night that bulk boxes/cases/crates were limited one per customer until the demand dies down a bit.

I wasn't at all surprised to see that all the Tula 7.62x39 was gone (unfortunate since I just got a new to me SKS last week that is in need of food), but was totally surprised at how many other common rifle and pistol calibers that aren't necessarily as common in "evil black assault rifles" were nearly or completely sold out as well. I've gotta wonder if the "End of the World" Mayan Calendar thing has anything to do with it. It's obviously not the main issue, but might compound the problem. J&G sales also ran completely out of ALL 7.62x39 ammo between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning! as of right now all they have is some tracer ammo and Bulk 500rd cases of Silver Bear JHP.

All I can say is I hope things clam down and return to a semblance of normalcy soon.

"Normalcy" will not be returning to the gun world for months at least. Ironic that the most anti-gun President in US history is responsible for the most unprecedented increase in gun ownership in US history.

That is ironic.

Last time, as soon as a box of ammo showed up at Walmart it was snatched up. That went on for almost a year at least, this time it may be worse. I didn't shoot for months.

Check this out, I bought 20 on monday for $11 per, and I am sooooooo tempted to sell a few at that gain.

I believe before now and the looming changes there will certainly be another lull where I could recoup a bit of that loss:confused:

21st is almost over and it is not even slowing down around here...
