Rebarrel question

How about the 280 Remington. It bridges the gap between 270 and 30-06 and outperforms both. It being 7mm (284) it has a wide choice of bullets available .I get 7mm magnum performance without all that recoil . The 7mm round has long been thought to be ballistically correct .The 280 will fit your action and is really a great round.........................LOUD

I have considered the 280AI but someone told me the do better with 140grain bullets. I prefer to shoot heavier bullets with higher bc. But if they will shoot heavy bullets efficiently that round sounds tempting.

...As to affordability, there is a cheaper option than Douglas - that being a factory winchester "take-off" barrel. Some good take-off barrels literally have no rounds down them since leaving the factory - the rifles were used for "donor actions". Lots for sale on Gunbroker and Ebay...
If you decide on replacing the barrel, this is good advice from Doyle that I can personally vouch for. Some years back I bought a .30-06 Win 670 (a model 70 without a floor plate) that someone had abused & it had a "ringed" barrel. I could even feel the bump on the outside. I found a take-off barrel on Gunbroker in .270 Win for $20 plus $15 shipping. Surprisingly, I found several other take-off's to choose from! The barrel installed easily & even the barrel markings lined-up. I loaded up some medium H4831/130gr loads & went to the range. Used the first 3 rounds at 25yds to get it centered then shot a 3-shot 3/4" group at 100yds!

BTW: Douglas makes a good barrel.

FWIW...

well I avoid the Ackley cartridges , the shoulder design may introduce feed problems in my mauser actioned rifles , and 100 ft per second just aint worth it. I fire up to 175 gr projectiles with great accuracy and effect. Just something to consider................LOUD
