Re-Blued Model 10 is Home!

Bought a 10-8 from Buds about 2 months ago. Gun locked up tight, but it was rough. I thought I could live with it, but it was bugging me. Yeah, I have more into this gun than it is worth, but I am super pleased with the results. Here are a few "before" pics:

And now the "after"

Stocks are Altamont finger-groove rosewood with medallions. Just couldn't put those Hogue rubber grips back on such a nice gun.

Gun was done by East Coast Bluing, in New Hampton, NY. I saw a video on Youtube with a Model 10 that had been done by them and I was shocked to find out they were 5 minutes from my job, so no shipping charges. Job took just over 6 weeks, which is long for them. They usually do it in 2, but they are a small shop and they were busy this time of year. Whole job cost me $270, but that included a $75 charge for disassembly and reassembly. If you detail strip it, you can save that. S&W quoted me $285 and a minimum of 10-12 weeks. And that was before shipping.

So this one will never be sold, because I have too much into it. But that's a good thing, because although it is not MY duty gun, it was a cop duty gun and I want something nice to pass on to my son one day. My Uncle gave me his duty Model 10 years ago because his son had a drug problem and he didn't want a gun in the house. Years later, when his son was clean, I saw my Uncle at a family event and he asked about the Model 10. I told him I rarely shot it and he dropped the topic. The next day, I shipped it to an FFL near him and when it arrived, I called him and told him to pick up his gun. He was so happy. He fired that 10 more than once on the job (NYPD like me), and killed one guy with it.

Now I gotta wax it. Prints and rub marks are drawn to this!

I don't think it needed refinishing. What you got is a typical blue job-over polished with edges rounded. But hey- it's all one color and it's shiny.

Over polished? I had a Model 19 from 1967 that was much more polished. And it was factory original. To each his own, I guess. I'm not regretting the work.

Looks great!

I have thought about having S&W do a bead blast finish on my model 10. There are enough pits that a reblue won't do much for it.

Nothing like a good shooting M & P or Model 10. I have several M & Ps - but they all show some wear and "character". I like 'em that way . . . good honest wear. If you like yours all one color though . . . everyone has their likes and dislikes and more power to you! You've got a good shooter there so forget about the $$ you put in to it to get it looking the way you want it to . . just shoot it and enjoy it and be happy! That's what it's all about! Good photos and thanks for sharing! :)

That's the idea! I don't see holstering it since it's not gonna be a carry piece, but it's gonna get shot. And any wear it gets between now and when I give it to my son will be wear and character that WE put on there!

It's difficult to NOT like a model 10/64.... I bought a 64 for just over $200, and I'm loving it. I really like Rugers and other guns as well, but it's difficult to beat a Smith K-frame for just all around "slickness".. I've had a couple of folks do the "yawn" thing when I tell them about the ol' .38 special , but when they actually agree to shoot it... you can see the light bulb coming on. They rant about how smooth and accurate... "easy to hit with" that it is.
I just smile...:D

I like those grips.... gonna go check out their website...

If you want the medallions you gotta choose the grip and add to your cart. The medallion option will be there for 10 bucks additional.

I think it looks terrific and MAYBE some of the edges have softened a bit, almost looks like a "carry melt" and I would have to agree that I really have a heap of fun enjoying guns that have a lot of wear on them -- and I probably don't get quite as much enjoyment if I think I'm taking something pristine and ADDING wear to it, but I have no doubt that the pictured work looks really very nice.

I can't say that I can think of a situation where I would choose to have it done also, but never say never.

I disagree about it's worth

If you trade it or sell it then, yes.
If you hand it down to a grandchild or other significant person then it will be pretty much priceless.
