Re-barrel ideas

Bought a Mod 70 lightweight .270 WSM at the pawnshop. Some knucklehead shot it with dirt in the barrel and bulged the barrel. I bought it cheap just for the action and stock. I am trying to decide what to re-barrel it to. The .325 WSM is the only WSM I dont have, but it does not really interest me. Other than the obvious, (a member of the WSM family) does anyone have any ideas for something interesting to build off this action? The bolt face already being opened up so large is the limiting factor.

Do you have a 7mm/300WSM? It would fit your bolt and who does not want a wildcat cartridge! Other than that I would look at getting a new bolt and maybe doing a 308 or 243 Winchester.

If you use a smaller-diameter cartridge, there may be feeding problems. With a new bolt, and controlled round feed, feeding problems may be minimized, but not eliminated.

The .270 WSM is one of the best of the short magnums, but buying factory ammo is very expensive. If you handload, the cost is pretty good, but new cases may be difficult to find.

6.5 WSM, .338 WSM, .375 WSM, .458 B&M or .50 B&M if you want something a little different. All the above just require a new barrel nothing else.

The .458 B&M actually looks interesting. Do you know if anyone has the reamers for rental? Its not interesting enough to buy a reamer, but probably interesting enough to rent one.:D

hgmeyer, thanks for reminding me about the .25WSM. I do not have it. I had forgotten about it. It will definitely be in the running.

IMHO the 300 WSM is the best of the bunch and by selecting the right bullets will do anything the 270WSM, 7mmWSM or 325WSM will do. Even if I already had 1 rifle in 300 WSM I'd take this opportunity to build another with a high quality match barrel and a custom fiberglass stock.

There is a very good chance you'll sell the other one once the project is complete.

Depending on where the bulge is, I'd also be tempted to just cut it off and have a carbine. If you can still keep 21-22" of barrel you'd be surprised at how little speed you'll lose.
