Range Report: S&W Mountain Gun .45 Colt....

recoil

Actually ,it was a pleasant surprise. I am the rare bird that enjoys recoil. I learned to shoot with a model 29, and I have a hard time telling a .22 from a .45 auto. The harder a gun kicks, the better I shoot it. I think it helps me concentrate harder or something....In any even the harder the kick the bigger the fun! My favorite fun gun is a three inch 629....

Stephen A. Camp,
I enjoyed reading your range test on this revolver. I have a 25-2 that I bought just over 20 years ago that I really love.
But 80% of the shooters today do tests of magnumized loads out of the Rugers, and other heavier and stronger revolvers.
Not that this is bad, it's just that I like to read tests of regular pressure loads out of regular guns like I have too.

Just two questions:
A; Have you checked the chamber throats on your revolver? My 81 vintage 25-5 has very ovesized throats, (.4569-.457"). No I'm not kidding. It leads severly with anything less than .454 + dia lead bullets, or jacketed bullets. Some day I hope to find or have made a cylinder with correctly sized throats.
B; What does Pachmyer call the grips you have on it?

Great article, I'll be around to see if you write more.

Great report Stephen!
I bought the twin to yours, also in '96. Had a local fella make a pair of stocks for it from mesquite. Great shooter using Lyman's #452424 mold (255-gr. SWC) in front of 9 grains of Unique.

For lighter plinking, I often use Black Hills .45 Schofield "cowboy" loads.

Thanks again for the report and the pics.

The TFL revolver crowd:

You know, as a group, we're a pretty serious group of consumers of older S&Ws in general, and N-frames in particular. (Hey--No slight to the K- and J-frame fans here. I have some of them, too.:))

BULaw - - - Regarding the Mtn Gun for $425: Man, if you like the idea of N-frame Smiths a-tall, I'd say Go For It!

I like guns a lot. I particularly like HAND guns. I have several now, and have owned a file cabinet full of others in the past. I'm not absolutely sure I can say that, if I kept only ONE revolver, the .45C Mountain Gun would be IT, but the choice would be close. (Might have to keep just one short .38 ahead of the big gun.)

Denny - - -Man, I LOVE that bullet and load! My 454424 blocks (Elderly version of the 452424) drops two big ol' slugs that weigh 276 grs, and I keep switching back and forth between Unique and H. Universal. Accurate, but I don't shoot as well as S. Camp. :p

Like you, I use the lighter load sometimes. I bought 100 new Star Line Scofield cases, but have been using the longer brass with the 230 LRN ACP bullet, ahead of 8.0 gr. of W-231. This is good for steel plate matches and falls in nicely from HKS speedloaders. I use the Wilson's Miculek stocks on mine, a birthday gift from Elder Son. What kind of holster do you use for yours?

Best,
Johnny

Hello, Johnny, MY GOOD FRIEND, OL' BUDDY, PAL, and so forth. Next time you cast some of those great ol' big shot glass looking slugs for the .45 Colt, I'll buy you a catfish dinner with all the trimmin's for a handfull of them!

Either way, I'll still buy catfish dinner sometime! Bahahahahhahahahha!

(For ya'll that don't know, Moderator Guest is a heck of a nice guy.)

Best.

Johnny--

The holster I carry mine in is not a brand you would know--the Duelin' D--my cattle brand (read as a backwards D next to a regular D). I dabble a bit in makin' holsters, saddle bags, and have carved a saddle or two:)

. . . those great ol' big shot glass looking slugs . . .

Sure, Stephen - - - While most of them are loaded up on new Star Line brass, I took inventory and found a couple of hundred +. I'll put 'em in the car so I can give them to you sometime soon.. I'll be out of pocket until Monday night.

I don't have a place to set up my casting stuff at present, but I've already e-mailed my pal who has most of my stuff. Need a bunch of the 454424 (sized .452, of course) and those long-nosed Keith-Thompson .357 SWCs. He uses my gear and furnishes the lead, and I size the bullets and box them.

Denny - - - How about posting some photos of your leather stuff? (I really liked the little saddle--Couldn't unzip the other image.)

Best,
Johnny
