Range Fees

With regard to real estate costs for outdoor ranges, I was thinking in terms of middle TN (OP), not the LA area, but I can see where land costs would be steep in SOCAL.

Land costs where I live are not bad at all, so the indoor ranges are going to cost more since equipment costs will outweigh land costs.

I pay $50 a yr for a membership which gets a daily range fee of $7 for the day. indoor only, 25yrds Pistol calibers only.

Looks like I'll pay the $275 for an annual at least for one year after my monthly runs out in about 2 weeks. May wait a month or so till this ammo situation changes a bit. Waste of money if no ammo.

I'm awaiting my carry permit from the state and have purchased two pistols recently that I definitely need some practice with. Until recently I hadn't shoot a box of shells in 35 years plus I never shot small pistols like these before, only .22 target and .45 in the Army.

I live in Arkansas and within 2 hours of me I have four free outdoor ranges that are very nice. We have a few local ranges and indoor ranges and they run $50-$100. Overall we are lucky here. Lots of places to pull the trigger. :)

Our range is state owned. Rifle & pistol ranges are $7 a day, no annual fee. It is outdoors with cover & restrooms.

The clay target center for sporting clays, trap, skeet, & 5stand are charged by the bird, about 30 cents a bird. There is no annual fee there either.

In Florida you have the choice to join different gun clubs/range. There are about an equal amount of indoor and outdoor ranges; its usually one or the other.

I've only been a member of a large indoor LGS in my area called "Shoot Straight". They have multiple locations in Central FL, and they both have a store and range within their buildings. Indoor range varies from 20-100yards which is excellent IMO. Indoor ranges allow you to shoot without worry about weather conditions and "cold/hot" range, and using mechanical target holders (switch activated).

Although I've been to multiple outdoor ranges, sometimes I prefer the indoor range because of the unpredictble weather (heat, thunderstorms, etc). Average membership fees are $40/month - $250/yr indoor. Outdoor ranges are around $150/yr-$300 depending on which range and how long the outdoor range is.

I'd be curious to see how various indoor range fees compare, if we look at:

A) Ranges where the annual fee covers all range time

B) Ranges where the annual fee provides discounted rates for range time (and possibly ammo and targets)

C) Ranges where membership is required to be able to pay for range time

I suspect the numbers, in any given geographical area, would be different based on those conditions.

I have shot at A and B type ranges; I have friends who are members of C type clubs.

Only indoor range in my town is your type B. 25 yards, 6 lanes. 5 minutes from my house. Targets (full size POST silhouettes, etc) are $.50 each if you don't bring your own.

$125 yearly membership = $6 per hour

or

$12 per hour if you're not a member.

Local range I shoot at. No plumbing, one porta potty, bring your own target stands, chairs and water. Fees...$0.00. City Maintained and cleaned every morning, lots of dumpsters for debris. Good people.

Random downrange photo 300 yard line. :) BIG backstop! FYI, that B-27 target is at 200 yards, the upper section is 300 yards.

Now the contrast - closest INDOOR range is Teds...51.5 miles one way, $14 an hour to shoot, 25 yard rifle approved range, yearly couple membership $360.

I'll stick with what i have.

I really enjoy shooting at Ben Avery. I live 45miles away and still prefer it to the indoor ranges...even in the summer.

C2 Tactical opened an indoor range in Tempe (much closer to me), but I cringe at their fees:
$15 per person per hour.
$150 annual membership means you only pay $10 per person per hour. No mention of guests allowed with this membership level.

The part that feels like insult added to injury ($$) is that the indoor ranges around here typically won't let you and your partner take adjacent lanes when available. They'll split you up or make you share a lane.

shoot straight...

The Shoot Straight ranges are decent in the metro Orlando & Tampa areas.
But the owners/mgmt makes using the gun ranges way to complex IMO.

The Apopka retail location has been the site of a few suicides & ADs too.

I'm not saying the blame lies with Shoot Straight but they seem to draw in the unstable & reckless shooters.
If the range is unsafe or you can relax & shoot-train, then there's no point in going there.

OPC, Ted's did say if I was there and shooting with my significant other, it would be $14 for me...and $10 for her, IF we shared a lane.
Back when I worked at Jensens indoor range, IIRC we charged $7 to shoot...until you got tired, ran out of ammo, whatever. We made money - not much, but we made money. Yearly membership was $100, and allowed unlimited range use plus low cost guest use, low cost rentals, etc.

I wonder if the posters here, especially regarding the cheap fees annually for indoor, have air conditioning year round, new EPA approved exhaust systems,
totally cleaned ranges each day, good lighting, access to a good and knowledgeable staff, spacious and clean toilet facilities, perhaps a lounge where guns may be stored and an area for cleaning said guns, a classroom with up-to-date simulation targets and good instructors for newbies, during peak times staffers who can act as watchdogs to head off carelessness, ample parking in well-kept lots, overall cleanliness of the entire store along with the range, lanes with electronic controls for IDPA and police exercises, and.......????

Well, the above all cost money. So a $275 or $400 a year fee doesn't seem too bad, especially since the startup costs for indoor ranges these days runs into the several million dollars.

The questions I posed pretty much describe at least six new, or refurbished, ranges that have opened up in the North Georgia area.

I remember at least two ranges that are now modernized that used to be like entering a dust-filled coal mine.

Sure UncleEd - just spoke with The Marksman II in Tucson, a very well built range with many upgraded facilities since it was Jensen's years ago, with a completely rebuilt backstop, etc.
Prices are as follows;
$10 to shoot ALL DAY
$8 to shoot ALL DAY for military
$6 to shoot ALL DAY for LEO

Membership $199,
$119 for LEO
$109 for Military, all the above is plus tax.
Members shoot free, with free ear and eye protection rental plus discounts on renting range guns.

25 yard indoor range, quite nicely built, friendly people, good ventilation.

This information is approximately 10 minutes old as I type this. ;)
