range discussion

Double Impact

New member
I went to the range and I happen to be be using a Sig sauer p226 as my primary carry right now so thats what I took to the range.

I'm an old guy but there was another gentlemen there that made me look young.

Any way he was shooting two different glocks, he packed up to leave and came over to talk before taking off. he started his conversion off with you should get yourself a glock that sig will fail for you when you need it most. Thats why almost all LE use glocks you know.

I was stunned and returned with no, not really it's because they get them so cheap and thats why you see most all of the elite agencies like the Navy Seals,Texas Rangers.national Guard, FBI and many others that can afford them use sig's. He just said well have a good day!

What do you guys think about my reply or his statement?

You are correct. Glocks are decent pistols, but most LE agencies don't by them for quality. They buy for price, for simplicity, and sometimes for political reasons (MD state police bought Beretta 92 when Beretta moved to Accoceek, MD).

Typical opinions that you hear from time to time at the range and gun shops. On both sides of this exchange...

Your reply wasn't inflammatory or his response discurtiuos... So you are ahead of the game there.

If you like your sig and it has proven reliable, then no need to worry over others opinions.

Fanboyism. Many departments also use S&W M&Ps and SIG still has a percentage as well.

most all of the elite agencies like the Navy Seals,Texas Rangers.national Guard, FBI and many others that can afford them use sig's.

Also fanboyism. I'm not sure I consider the national guard an elite unit and most of the FBI I know of uses Glocks, though maybe you meant the Secret Service. Glock's very aggressive pricing is definitely a big factor in their usage, but the guns are generally good guns too.

I stopped caring about these, "but my gun company is best", arguments recently. The reality is the market is saturated with what are by all accounts good guns at prices that are pretty amazing and span a wide range. To me it becomes personal for people because they have a lot invested in their choice. It's something they use, in many cases, to defend their lives and the lives of their family members. They want to believe they've made the best choice. I get that, but in 60+ handguns owned now I can count on one hand the handguns that had serious back to the factory issues and all of them were remedied on return and all of them were quality control issues, not design issues. Pick what works best for you and be happy if others find something that works for them. The gentleman at the range should have said good day and left you to it.

I'd say that we have a winner!

Double Impact, there was nothing wrong with your response. Personally, I'd have been a little annoyed if the only reason someone approached me on the range was to chide me for my choice of firearm. Perhaps particularly so if I was shooting a firearm from a reputable company like Sig. It might be different if I was out there shooting a Potmetal 9000 that I'd grabbed at a garage sale.

All bulk purchases by public agencies, whether they're firearms, tires, patrol cars or dog collars, are a balance of budget and quality. Glock is a good balance of those things, but they're not the only game in town.

"...That's why almost all LE use Glocks you know..." Nonsense. Glock's very aggressive marketing(ditto for Sig) and the fact that most police firearms get carried a lot and fired little. Most cops see their pistol as another piece of heavy kit they're required to lug around and like the idea of a Glock being relatively light.
"...when Beretta moved to Accoceek..." MDSP buying 'em might have been part of the deal. Who knows?

A bit weird he only approached to start an argument but wasn't interested in arguing, however I don't think it sounds like anything worth thinking twice over was said.

Personally I'd trust a glock or a sig equally. I prefer da/sa so I carry sig but if glock ever releases a da/sa model count me in. Never gonna happen but hey, it would be neat.

I think you handled it perfectly. I wonder how many "almost all" actually is in his mind.

Had it been me, I would have told him that in this area, Glocks and S&W are battling it out for second place among PD's and that Sig is being used far more than the other two including the Michigan State Police.

Maybe next time you see him you could offer to let him shoot your Sig/s.

What an arrogant jerk LOL.

You handled it well, better than I would have for sure. I probably would have veered into how it is hard to shoot accurately when the brass keeps hitting you in the face or such.

LEOs drive mostly Fords and Chevys too, Does not mean I will give up my Hondas because of that.

I had a guy give me that his Glock was the "choice of Police Officers" once. I pointed to my P226 and said "choice of the NAVY SEALS" as you did. Ended that conversation real quick.

I would have replied

"I already have one. Glock 17. Trigger stinks. Trigger dingus is annoying. And, accuracy is mediocre at best. If it was as good as you say, it would be here at the range with me instead of in the very back of my safe."

lol SIGARMS 228 !!

surprised you had an opinion on this :D

I own Glocks 19 and 21 and Sigs M11 A1 and P-220
If I had to only have one of the above I would never consider myself under gunned.

I do prefer double/single action, thus the Sigs.

I got nothing against Glocks - just Glock owners who have that kind of attititude. :D

My first semi auto pistol was a Gen2 Glock 19 that I still own and has been a fantastic pistol for me over the years.

It's a bit off subject in a firearms discussion, but I work in a place where Ford, chevy, honda, caterpillar, ihc products and such come in on a daily basis. I see fanboys of these brands every day and I must hear always how great Ford is, how it's Chevrolet or it's nothing and how this honda engine how this guy has it will produce 385hp (heard this one last week). I try very hard not to engage in these conversations, just accept their work and take their money. Though the temptation to tell them they're full of it is always there. That Glockster sure did show some arrogance about it. I do not own a sig. I dont own any guns because it's the choice of xyz if I did my gp100 wouldve been gone long ago. I do own 2 glocks because price is always a factor for me.

SIGs are good, Glocks are good, there are lots others that are good. Walking up to someone at the range to tell them that your guns is better than their gun is, at the least, questionable behavior.

If your gun had been jamming a lot and you were obviously frustrated, it might have made sense for him to try to help out and maybe make some suggestions. But coming out of the clear blue to tell you to get rid of your SIG and buy a Glock was messed up. I don't know what makes people do stuff like that.

Maybe if you shot better...he would not have poked fun at you by disking your high $ pea shooter? I own Glocks, Sigs and many other firearms. I enjoy shooting all my firearms but each firearm has good and bad points. However, when it comes to my families life, I place my trust in my G30 as my goto firearm.

You say What? Are you the old fart that was at the range gsparesa?:D

Another blind worshiper of the glock with an ego big enough to fill Dallas Stadium. One of many that believes that there's only one gun out there dependable enough to trust your life with. To these you're an idiot fool that needs to be ostracized in public for being so dumb as to buy another brand.

When he saw you at the range he said to himself "Poor fool probably doesn't know his gun isn't a striker fired LEO trusted Glock. I better go spread the good news or I'll be responsible for his souls damnation."

Or in other words typical glock owner...probably owns an apple Iphone also. To glock owners you're the gun owning equivalent of ISIS.
