Ramshot powder

I think Ramshot powders are the "best kept secret" in reloading. Personal experience with Silhouette has been posted here several times. I have also extensively used Competition in .357mag, .44mag and 45acp. For a pleasant, low-recoiling load, it's every bit as good as Trail Boss, and feeds thru powder meters a bit better as well. I have used their Zip powder in .357mag and 45acp as well and found it to be a very good powder. TAC already has a good reputation for 5.56 and 7.62x51.

Sorry to hear about some of your experiences with True Blue. I went back over my data this morning, and in .45 Colt, .44 Mag, .44 Special, the Extreme Spread was in the 18-30fps range (15 shot samples). Consistent as all get out. In .357 it was in the 25-45fps range.

In .32 H&R Mag the ES jumped to the 40-50s which still isn't horrible for revolver cartridges. I did see if a Magnum primer would help, but for my back to back test load, the the ES jumped to 66fps and standard primer was 39fps. Big difference. Stick with standard primers (I use CCI). FYI, In this cartridge I use primarily AA#5, as I did get better results.

I got to the range today to shoot up those test loads, 6 of them in total.

The 1st tests being the intended test for the powder and my new 380 with another test with 9mm. The test loads again were 380acp using the Ramshot Silhouette powder and X-Treme 100gr FP;
Load 1: 10ea @ 3.7gr., OAL .955",
Load 2: 10ea @ 4.0gr., OAL .955"
Load 3: 5ea @ 4.4gr., OAL .970" max load

Load 4: 10ea @ 2.9gr., OAL .970" Loaded with Hodgdon HP-38

Next were 2 loads for 9mm using the Ramshot and Berry's 115gr RN.

Load 1: 10ea @ 5.5gr., OAL 1.140"
Load 2: 10ea @ 5.8gr., OAL 1.140"

The 380 all fired and cycled w/o a hitch including the starting load other than one round that hung up after loading the magazine and releasing the slide. I think that was me! Loads 2 and 3 were the most accurate over 2 five round groups. The starting loads with both powders produced the widest spread and most were center but very low. Also shot a mag of 10 factory Federal white box target rounds to compare. The handloads were as accurate as the factory with less felt recoil.

The 9mm thru my PT92C the starting loads were all over the place while the 5.8gr. tightened up very nicely. Sad part is I didn't mark the targets when I shot the HP-38 loads I've been using or shoot them next to each other to compare.

So I will be loading many more for the 380 and trying more loads for the 9mm. So far I'm liking what I see with this powder.

Thanks FrankenMauser. Don't know if this will be enough to persuade you to try it again but I'm ready to move forward with this powder. Especially for the 380 as the HP-38 only has a spread of .3 gr. from start to max with the 100gr bullet.

With the 9mm I still have plenty of room to move up as the max load with the 115gr bullet is up to 6.2gr so it might be interesting to see what 6.0gr will do.

Love me my Silhouette -- 115 gr, 124 gr, & 147 gr. It meters well, burns clean, moderate SD, nice group. My 9MM CZ-75B likes 125 gr. Blue Bullets for consistency and economy. Stop using other powders, except to reduce powder inventory.

Just finished loading up another 100 380acp for my EAA Pavona as it seems to like this load. I did increase the OAL length to .970" to see what happens. It really liked the max load at that length. Was then getting ready to load some more of the 9mm at 5.8gr but cracked the plastic hopper on my Auto Disk so that brought an end for now..
