Rainbow Six: The MOVIE?

I'm pretty sure there are a lot of TFL members out there who are fans of the Tom Clancy book Rainbow Six and the Red Storm Entertainment game of the same name.

About 6 months ago, I heard a rumor that there was going to be a movie made based on the book.

Has anybody else heard of this rumor?

I hope the movie is based on the game and not the book. The game had a much better storyline. The book was definatley not up to Clancy's standards.

Compared to the rest of TC's work, Rainbow Six is definitely predictable, calculated fare. The book is good, but it looks like it was written with the game/movie already in mind. Marketability is everything these days. R6 is too "assembled", but hey , it's still a good read.

They just can't use William Dafoe as Mr. Clark. Remember Clear and Present Danger. There is no way that he looked anything like John Clark really would. I thought that was pretty lousy casting after having read all of the books.

Actually, I thought Willem Dafoe was a pretty good Mr. Clark -- better than Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan. I like both actors, but Ford's too old to play Ryan. Although I read a few months ago that he was considering a script from another one of the earlier Clancy novels.

Still think Alec Baldwin was the best Jack Ryan. Just can't stand him. John Clark, hmmm, Chuck Norris? Nah, can't act. Lee Majors? No, he can't act either. It would need to be someone late-40s/early-50s that was an "action" actor 15-25 years ago...

I didn't think Willem DaFoe fit the image of the Clark that I read about in Clear and Present Danger and Without Remorse. I still haven't figured out who I would cast as Clark. Maybe Tommy Lee Jones? He did a pretty good job in The Fugitive.

IIRC, Jack Ryan didn't play that big a part in the book, so I wouldn't worry about casting part in a Rainbow Six movie.

Now, the part of Ding Chavez would be kind of tough. Jon Lequizamo(SP?!) looked like he knew what he was doing in that crappy movie where they board a 747 mid-air. (Can't remember the title, but the Steven Segal character died in the first 10 minutes (Yes!)). I've thought maybe Antonio Banderas could play Ding, but he is just too big to be the Ding we all know and love.

IMHO, the book was way better than the game. Since I had played the game before I read the book, all the surprise was gone from the book. Books have always turned out better than the movie for me. I guess a fabricated audio and visual adaptation has no match against our own personal imagination.

A TC book I would really like to see adapted to a movie would be Without Remorse.

TLJ would be a kick-ass Clark. The man can actually *act*. Or... how about Harvey Keitel?

Alec Baldwin looks most like I'd imagined Jack Ryan. Too bad he's a liberal puke. :)

mk86fcc - I agree with you on the Bladwin being a better Ryan thing. Too bad his politics stink. How about William Shatner. He's making a comeback with those Priceline.com adds ;) JUST KIDDING. TLJ would be good, but he has too much of an established personality. I think a lesser known but good actor would be much better.

jcoyoung - I agree with Jon Lequizamo on the Kurt Russel/Steve Segal movie, but he has gotten way too annoying in the interim. Who was the Hispanic actor in the original Substitute movie? He might be pretty decent.

My vote goes to:

Tom Selleck

For John Clark? Definately not Willem DeFoe!

My vote is for either Tom Berrenger or Tom Selleck. They both fit the Clark profile.

Tom Selleck as John Clark? Interesting! I'd never thought about him before, and I've been mulling over in my mind (since I read the book) who would make a good Clark. Definitely NOT DeFoe, he's not brutal enough.

I thought Harrison Ford made a pretty good Ryan, he's just too old for the part. His laid-back, understated nature seemed to fit with the Ryan I've read about in the books. I can't think of anyone else right now to play him (definitely NOT Shatner!) :)

jcoyoung, That would be great if they made a movie of Without Remorse. It's one of my fave TC novels.

You know, I hadn't thought of Tom Berenger, but he is kind of how I picture Clark. (Sniper, the Substitute). Ding, I'm not sure. Not John Leguzomo(sorry don't know how to spell it). I think probably the same actor who played him in C&PD. Same guy has been in a ton of movies, usually playing some para-military type(The Rock, Alien 4, the Substitute). But I don't know his name.

I will gladly volunteer myself to play a minor role as a terrorist scumbag who gets waxed. I do look the part. :) (TFL members from the Utah get-together can vouch).

Well how about Michael Bein, or Tom Berenger as Clark? Both damn good in a military role.
They have that look, you know.

Best Regards,
Don

Alternative Casting?
How about Tom Hanks? Think about that. Or the guy that played with Hanks in both Ryan and Green Mile? He did a good job in both roles.
I'ld rather not see so many BIG NAMES... Just guys that can act the roles right. R6 would be a very technical movie for it to come across right. - Tom Cruise would ruin it for me. Its not about the names... Its about the guns! :D

I can think of two actors offhand for Ding, but don't know either of their names. One plays on "NYPD Blue", the other played on "Walker", and had a brief costarring role in "Sons of Thunder" (or some such), a spin-off of "Walker." How 'bout the big guy that was the bar owner in "Sons of Thunder", and played Bubba in "Heat of the Night" with Carroll O'Conner for Clark? Physically he'd be right, and he cleans up real nice... :D

I can see Michael Bien(Tombstone, the Terminator,The Rock) as the sniper, Homer Johnston. Jean Reno (Professional, Ronin) as Louiselle.

How about Arnold Schwarzenegger as Clark? Just kidding!!!
My vote is for Tom Berenger. He's perfect for the part.
