Raccoon Pack Attack -- What Handgun?

I'd have to go for a shotgun.

Only one I ever took out with a pistol required a dozen shots (9mm LRN) head/upper body before it gave up the fight. Dog had it cornered nose to nose and wouldn't call off. Although it was only a medium sized coon I didn't care to risk getting close enough to pull the dog off and risk be attacked myself. Only an instant to stop them from tangling. I managed to save the dog from any injury.

AA-12.

Seriously, the highest capacity shotgun I could find.

I've shot two raccoons with a 12 Gauge. The first one went down fast. The second one was rabid. It took two shots from a full choke 12Ga with #4 to stop him.

$1.99 Walmart cap gun.
Get the chrome-plated version.
Throw it on the ground in front of the angry raccoons.
They'll be mesmerized and fight each other, instead of you.

"Oooooohh, Shiny!!"

How about one of those LARGE canisters of Pepper spray that they advertise to use on bears?:D
A 12 Ga. would do it but would be very noisy and damaging to other things around the varmints.

santa coon

You invited it in to sit by the fire with some cookies and hot milk, and read it The Night Before Christmas?

Well, after all, it was Christmas Eve.

OK, you got me, that's the one I told the kids, so, any others? .........

LOL'ing over here at the thought of the damage that would've been done to the room had i popped the 'coon i batted with my 12 guage & a target load. :D Now THAT would have gotten the cats' attention.

Nasty little sob's. Don't like to die very fast from any of the pistol calibers. Whatever pistol you use your probably going to have to hit it a few times for it to stop. Few years ago was camping in East Tennessee. Tied our food up high in a tree. We were in bear country. Had my G30 along with me for self defense. In the middle of the night we heard a terrible commotion outside. Was afraid it was a bear. Went outside with my flashlight and gun and it ends up being a coon with an attitude. Tried to scare him off and he was going to fight me for our food. Long story short 3 rounds and he was finally down. And I only shot when he came at me BTW. Probably rabid. He was not real impressed with my .45. Just tough little sob's as I said earlier. Can't carry one where we went but a shotgun or rifle probably would of stopped it right there. Again handguns are lousy stoppers.

Raccoons are geting more bold in the city i live in. I use to never even see them. Now i see them in my yard all the time. I keep my dog away from them for fear of rabbies, but she made short work of the one that got under my porch.

You've Gotta Be Kiddin' Me

Working strain: Patterdales, Jack Russells, Airedales or Pit Bulldog.

Game On, B^%$! :D

I had some crap on my shooting bench out in the field. Probably left by the racoon I saw one evening who startled me a bit when he came crashing through the leaves in the woods at my back. I yelled out thinking it was one or more coyotes, then saw him stand on his hind legs. I've had more problems with possums coming near the house than racoons.

Tom 2 they sell .22 LR by Aguilar 30 grains either in solid point truncated point? and hollow point which are rated at 1730 FPS these are the fastest .22 LR around. Also Aguilar sells a 40 grain .22 LR that is around 1,400 fps. Try these hot loads out on the furry critter.:D
A 12. gauge should take care of this job though.

I wouldn.t mind trying out my new Ruger Super Blackhawk on a coon, but a pack would problem swarm me.

How 'bout a super-soaker full of gasoline and a lighter?

:D

Maybe a solid Ruger Mark II, or a Ruger Charger in .22lr. Or you could just use any typical caliber handgun/rifle that you already own.

Not sure how many are required to be a pack. That said, where I go fishing at night we get about 4-7 of them trying (sucessfully at times) to steal our bait. I have since purchased a co2 pistol using pointed pellets at about 485fps with a rifled barrel. Certanly not a killer but they hightail it outta there(so do the skunks). Problem is they just don't remember a week later.
